Touya had always regarded Shindou as matching the more brazen seasons of summer and winter. The harsh but warm summer sun, beating down cheerfully on the people, inspiring them with expectations of fireworks and shaved ice, to the equally harsh winter winds, bringing with them shockingly cold and white snow to excite young and old alike; both seasons brought out colorful reactions from all those encompassed by them. Shindou had a similar effect on the people he came in contact with, and Touya had to admit with a begrudging smile that that effect had a grasp on him too.

In that regard, he had difficulty relating Shindou to the more subtle seasons of spring and fall. The sensitivity that the Japanese are said to have to the changing of seasons was especially true of these seemingly less exciting months, when thousands would still flock outside just to be in the middle of nature. There was something poetic about it, and Touya was sure that Shindou wasn't one for poetry.

It was on a slightly chilly autumn day that the two found themselves walking along a path in the park, pillared by tall maple trees, their tops enshrouded with vibrant red leaves. No matter how many times he saw it, no matter how naturally it came about every year, Touya always felt himself fill with an odd sort of childlike awe when walking under the bright red canopy. It was a happy feeling, and one that he wanted Shindou to experience with him. He wondered if he'd be able to get him to appreciate the wordless poetry with more than just a "yeah, it's pretty".

"Shindou--" Touya began, turning his attention back toward the other boy quite a few steps ahead of him, but stopping as he came into focus.

Fully expecting Shindou to be waiting impatiently with an "I'm hungry, let's GO already" frown on his face, Touya was somewhat startled to see him gazing up at the crimson foliage much like he had just been.

No, actually, it wasn't similar to him; instead of a bright eyed smile one would be more accustomed to seeing from the cheery Shindou was a look of...contemplation? Somber? Touya couldn't decide.

A slight gust of wind knocked free a number of leaves and sent them spirally down to the walkway. Shindou caught one, twirling it absently by its stem in his fingers before bringing it up and resting it ever so softly against his lips. He then glanced upwards again, lost in his own world, tapping the leaf lightly against his mouth.

Nostalgia. The word popped up in Touya's mind as he watched silently. The word with the bittersweet echo was what he was looking for. These red leaves were reminding Shindou of something, possibly someone. That same something or someone that Touya occasionally noticed taking over Shindou's mind when he didn't think Touya was watching.

The cool autumn air suddenly felt several degrees colder as he cast his eyes down, away from the other boy. It didn't seem fair. He had wanted to be the one that made this season significant for Shindou. It wasn't fair. Who was it that the red foliage made Shindou lose himself like this? Why wasn't it fair for him? Shindou wasn't supposed to be sentimental over something that filled him with joy.

"Shindou..." repeated Touya a bit louder, breaking the other from his reverie.

"Huh? What? Ah, To-Touya! Haha, sorry, I was zoning there for a second," Shindou said with a lopsided grin, scratching the back of his head as if an apologetic move. "I was just thinking of this one person I used to know, and I dunno...I guess you could almost say he was like a dog? EVERYthing made him excited, but especially the changing of the seasons. That and well, go," he added as an after thought. "But like in the fall? He'd especially like to burst into weird little haikus and stuff. I never really got it," Shindou finished with a laugh. A fond laugh.

"Boy, I'm starved. C'mon, let's go," and with that, he set off at a brisk pace.

Touya's unenthusiastic nod wasn't seen by Shindou, who was humming to himself now as he continued straight on. Following Shindou's lead, Touya stopped briefly to look up once more at the red tree tops.

Funny. He'd never thought of red as being a lonely color before.
