Theme 11: Gardenia
HiruMamo
***
“I hate damn flowers.”
“I don’t care,” Mamori scolded her boyfriend, Youichi Hiruma, as he sat in his hospital bed three weeks after his automobile accident. He had just been resting, and Mamori had decided to bring him his flowers from outside. “These are from Sena. You should be more thankful that he’s taking time out to send them!”
“Damn pipsqueak’s got his own damn life to manage,” Hiruma snapped, taking out a stick of sugarless gum and tossing it into his mouth. “Aren’t he and that damn cheerleader finally dating?”
“Hiruma, they’re gardenias,” Mamori muttered, smelling them. “Gardenias are beautiful. You should appreciate them gracing you with their presence. It’s not often they stoop so low…”
“You got something to say, damn girlfriend?”
“Don’t get all huffy,” Mamori sighed, rolling her shoulders back. “You should get some rest.”
“How can I sleep with that damn smell in the room?” Hiruma asked as Mamori sat down near the bed. “It makes it smell like someone came in and emptied out a can of air freshener.”
“You’re probably the one who stinks,” Mamori laughed, leaning forward. Hiruma flinched away and she laughed. “I knew it! You probably haven’t showered in weeks!”
“Damn girlfriend! Of course I’ve fucking showered!” he snapped, frowning. Mamori smiled warmly at her boyfriend. She knew that he didn’t like it when she teased her. Hiruma never liked being vulnerable.
“Sorry…” she murmured, leaning forward for a kiss. He grudgingly granted her one, but a very short one. “You know, these Gardenias are a really great variety.”
“There’s more then one?” Hiruma asked, raising an eyebrow. “Don’t they all look the fucking same?”
“No, Hiruma,” Mamori laughed, shaking her head. “This one is an ‘Aimee’.”
“What’s the damn difference?”
“It’s in what they mean,” Mamori told him. She held up the white flower and gave it a small smell. “This one means ‘first love’.”
Hiruma paused, looking at Mamori’s back as she smelled the flowers. He looked at his hands, then back at her. He blinked slightly, and then blew a bubble with his gum. “I guess they’re not that bad.”
End.
