A door opened somewhere above them and they all stilled, but the steps that echoed through the stairwell were going up, not down.
"We'd better get him out of sight," Riley said gesturing at the dog.
"Yeah," Charlie called Kosacki back and he went, reluctantly leaving the scratching fingers behind him. "Would you…"
Riley seemed to read his mind. "I'll take him." She clipped the leash back on and Kosacki followed her willingly enough, leaving Charlie and Sarah alone in the stairwell.I love your attention to Riley's character throughout your series. She isn't ever written as a main player (Lauren's clearly a stronger element than Riley is), but her characterization is layered and subtle and awesome. Riley's hyper-experience of fear and caution is definitely a survival mechanism, and although it leads to a lot of frustration when it ends up being paranoia (e.g. bus station), it clearly has ( ... )
