It's possible to get Doc Marten Boots For Life - I'm currently saving up for a pair. Basically, they're a smidge more expensive than normal boots BUT! DM will repair them, free of charge, and once they're completely worn out, they'll replace them, free of charge.
Otherwise, it's worth looking in the clearance sale on the DM website. I got my yellow-and-black DMs for £25 on clearance, reduced from £75.
I would get some boots, but I would ask the advice of a podiatrist first as to what kind of insoles you will need and what the best kind of shoe is. A bad pair of boots will only bugger up your ankles even more and the long term effect on your health is something you should absolutely put first.
Doc martens are not as well made as they once were, so do be open minded about the brand of boots you end up with. Docs might not necessarily be the very best boot any more. Try on lots of different kinds, get lots of advice, and see a foot ankle doctor type person to see how your healing is going before you make a final decision about what the most supportive thing is to wear.
Well, I have my own insoles (carbon fibre, which is possibly why my Chucks were shredded so quickly), so I don't have to worry about the soles of my feet. I'm not sure where to find a podiatrist, either, or how much an appointment would cost - honestly, the last time I went to the doctor it was because I had swine flu-induced bronchitis and I couldn't breathe properly, and even that was only because the parents yelled at me a lot. The last time I went to a doctor about my ankles, they honestly couldn't give a crap.
I'll definitely shop around more - Morag may be right about boots not being the best for strengthening. Hmmm. This is not going to be an in-and-out job, is it? Curses.
