The Vimes "Boots" Theory of Socio-Economic Unfairness.

Because I cannot make a decision without consulting the invisible people who live in my magic box.

Flist, I have a decision to make. I recently got my bond back from Everton Hall - about $250 that I did not necessarily expect to get. Yippee! I also have a pair of four-year-old hiking boots that I have worn every day since my Chucks died about a year ago. They are still mostly intact, except for the heels, which have worn away to such a degree that my ankles now tilt outwards at a 30 degree angle whenever I plant my feet.

This is deeply comical and all, but you may remember previous posts that largely involve me whining about my ankles and how I won't be running anywhere any time soon. (Jogging awkwardly for a few metres, maybe.) I need shoes that will not leave my feet any more buggered than they already are, and being an unfashionable sort, I tend to wear the same shoes every day.

By a stroke of coincidence, you can get a pair of Doc Martens for $250. I remember having a pair that lasted years, and when I threw them out it was because the leather had cracked on top and the cat had peed in them - the soles were barely dented. Wellington involves a lot more schlepping around than Abu Dhabi, it's true, but Docs seem like the best bet for boots that won't wear out before I've finished university; besides which, it'll be winter in a few months: waterproof is a big concern.

There are other things to take into consideration, though. The money could be reeeeeally useful in those oh-no-it's-the-end-of-the-month emergencies, which happen a lot. I could get a number of cheap shoes for that amount of money, though finding ones that fit my huge feet with the orthopedic supports in too (yes, I am secretly an elderly lady) is very hit or miss. Finally, my brother will be in Australia in a few months, and I am planning on flying over to see him - that $250 would make a large dent in the airline fees. Thus, my dilemma, in poll form:
