If you buy based on touch, I can't say that I'd recommend Internet shopping. Why don't you go to your local yarn store and molest some yarn there? Most store owners are really nice and can help you with any questions you might have.

As far as the labeling thing goes, "baby" yarn means that it's soft, machine-washable and probably in gooey pastel colors. In other words, appropriate for babies, but you can make stuff for adults out of it too.

I'm still having trouble bringing myself to spend $30 on one skein of yarn. I only have one local shop and thats the cheapest they have there.
I guess I'd like to learn how to use what yarn when instead of I LIKE I PUT ON NEEDLE that I do now.

Also lolcomics heck yes.

For me personally, unless a pattern really needs a specific weight of yarn, I usually just go by what looks/feels nice as well. And I'm with you, I won't ever be able to justify spending that much on a skein, so while I love my LYSs, it's mostly just eye candy.

I love looking around the shop. It would be awesome to be able to afford it, but its just way out of my budget right now.

I shop online, but only with things I've used, can check out from IRL friends, fondled at local yarn stores already...

I've also only purchased from Etsy, Webs and Knitpicks... Webs is good if you have a yarn in mind and you can find it cheaper there

I was actually looking at knitpicks, its what made me make the post. I'm trying to learn how to knit in the round and they have adverts for their shop all over knitting help.

I'm a big fan of Knitpicks Shine Worsted (and Sport). The colors are lovely and it's super soft and easy wash. I made a blanket for a friend's impending baby and had a bit of trouble letting it go when I was done.

Since I'm still learning I guess it'll give me time to buy in small amounts for small projects and get a taste for what I like yarn wise.

Man thank you for the links, I'm so putting this in my personal memories!

(in ur stores, molesting ur yarns)

That cracked me up!

I haven't ordered yarn from the internet yet. I'm like you, I like to feel and touch before I buy. But I'm sure I will in the future, so I'll keep the above website recommendations in mind.

I too am a yarn molester (lol) and was very skeptical about ordering yarn online. But, like some of the other folks here, KnitPicks has yet to let me down. I recommend Swish Worsted (great for hats!), Crayon (great for baby stuff) and Stroll anything. Both were soft and lovely to work with :D

Webs is also awesome. My future MIL orders from them a lot.

Good luck and happy shopping!
