Hats for Giant Heads?

Herro. I need to knit a hat for my step-dad, and his head is BIG. The "one size fits all" hats at the department stores don't fit him. I can't measure his head, or have my mom measure his head, without him knowing (he's not a sound sleeper anymore :P), and he doesn't have any other hats that he can wear to measure from ( Read more... )

it is totally impossible to say how large you should go with no knowledge of your dad's head size. i recommend you simply measure.

I agree that you're going to have to measure, but I also suggest a ribbed pattern to allow for some variation. in worsted weight, I used about 100 stitches in a 2x2 rib for my husband's gargantuan head and it worked fine.

I second that. You may just have to go for it and accept the fact that it may not fit. I've done that before and luckily, for you, a hat is not a HUGE committment, so if it doesn't fit, ya give it to someone else who it will fit and he still had the surprise of the hat and he will get one that fits when you measure his head. If the kid has a sense of humor, make a joke out of it, like, "Wow, I seriously thought that would fit. I bought everything that the yarn store had. They were gonna have to have more sheep flown in from Nebraska otherwise..." that sort of thing. Of course, if the kid wouldn't think that is funny, then I would skip the jokes, say sorry, and tell him you were sure about the size to make it ( ... )

Not to go against what everyone else is saying, but I'd totally just try knitting it up on larger needles in a chunky yarn, and try for hat patterns that have a k1 p1 rib, because it will be super stretchy...if it doesn't fit, at least you didn't have to put TOO much time into it.

yeah, I agree with the above poster. Use stretchy ribbing!
also, you could stage it so that your dad stands by something round and try to guess the size, relatively haha. So invite your dad into the kitchen and make him stand between watermelons and grapefruits or something.

LOL I wish that I could - I live about 2 hours away... I tried to get my mom to discretely measure his head :P
I'll try stretchy ribbing, and just make sure it's bigger than my husbands head...
