I never miss a chance to plug my favorite knitting book of all time, Victorian Lace Today. I know the name makes it sound a bit stodgy and uptight, but it's really an amazing book, filled both with amazing patterns for lace shawls (and some other garments, but really it's quite a lot of shawls) and fascinating stuff about knitting history. If you've had a bit of experience with lace knitting, this book offers a lot of interesting patterns to choose from, ranging from pretty simple to outrageously complex.
Seconded. I've been eyeing up my library's copy of Folk Shawls ever since I started knitting. They're pretty patterns and if I ever get that ambitious I'm totally knitting one up.

I haven't made anything from it yet, but I love the patterns.
