Tony scrabbled behind him, desperately trying to fit the key into the lock. He gave up momentarily, losing himself to the kiss, draping his arms over his partner’s shoulders, trying to shove himself further up on the thigh shoved between his legs. He moaned lustily, fingers tangling in short hair and tugging. He let his head drop back against the door, panting heavily, before he used his trembling hand to fit the key in and open the door, pouring heavily into his apartment. He nearly fell in, saved only by the heavy hand on his neck. He was hauled upright again, then walked heavily into the hall, his back pressed harshly into the wall as they kissed furiously, a picture frame falling off the wall to crash at their feet.
Hurried, loud footsteps sounded and Tony wrenched his head away to look to the side. “Gibbs?!” He demanded, pushing his partner away.
Oliver calmly released Tony, stepping to his side. “This is your Gibbs?” He asked.
“He’s not mine,” Tony muttered absent-mindedly. “Gibbs, what the fuck are you doing here?”
“Jesus, DiNozzo,” Gibbs said, eyes heavy with disgust and a few other hidden emotions as they looked at Tony, at the dark hickey marring his throat. “Not even a day and you already have someone else to fuck.”
Anger raced through Tony like lightening, his blood boiling. “No, you know what? This time, you don’t get to talk to me like that! I’m not in the wrong here. You’re the one who cheated on me, okay? You went back to your pretty little ex-wife and forgot about me, so you don’t get to condemn me for wanting to be with a friend.”
“Jethro? What’s going on? Was it the boy?” An uncertain, feminine voice called down, before the precise clicking of high heels sounded.
Tony turned furious, hurt eyes on Gibbs, and the older man winced. “You brought her here? Fuck, Gibbs, no wonder you were divorced three times! Jesus.” He turned away, scrubbing a frustrated hand through his hair.
Janine appeared, red hair swinging over one shoulder. “Jethro?” She asked.
‘Yeah. Janine, this is Tony. Tony, Janine.”
Oliver, Janine and Tony treated the former marine to incredulous looks.
“I think you should both leave, right now.” Tony said, his voice lowering dangerously.
Janine looked uncertainly at Gibbs again, who nodded. “Yeah, you should go.”
Janine hesitated, then nodded in return. “Alright.” She dragged one hand down Gibbs’ arm possessively, before turning on her heel to stalk past Tony and Oliver, sneering at Tony’s tall friend. She paused by Tony. “You should forgive him, sweetheart. He loves you, and that’s more than the rest of us got. And life with L. J. Gibbs is better than life without him. Trust me.” She whispered saccharinely into his ear.
Tony shuddered away from her, glaring at her. “Please leave.”
“On my way, sugar,” She smiled sickly sweet, and left, heels clacking away from them.
Oliver glared at Gibbs, then turned to Tony. “I should go, you don’t want me here for this. Call me tomorrow?”
“Yeah, of course.” Tony tilted his head up to accept a kiss on the cheek, catching and squeezing Oliver’s hand. “I’m really sorry about this, Ol.”
“Don’t be,” Oliver smiled. He scowled one last time at Gibbs, before following Janine’s footsteps, closing the door behind him gently.
The fight seemed to flow out of Tony at the departure of his friend, and he moved woodenly over to drop onto his couch, settling his head in his hands. He felt Gibbs sit down next to him, and flinched away from the gentle touch on his neck. “Don’t. Please, don’t. Just go.”
“Tony…”
Tony twisted away from Gibbs. “I don’t want to hear it, Gibbs. You don’t want me anymore, I get it. So you can just leave, and things will go back to like before. Unless you want me to resign? Fine. My letter will be on your desk first thing Monday morning.”
“Tony, that isn’t what I want!” Gibbs sounded frustrated, and suddenly Tony was glad that he wasn’t the only person affected by this.
“Then what, Gibbs? What do you want? You’d better tell me because I sure as fuck have no idea. Christ, Gibbs, you said you wanted me, you had me. I would have done fucking anything for you. Then I walk into your place to see you bending her over your kitchen counter, reacquainting yourself with her tonsils. So you don’t want me anymore. What the hell do you want? Just tell me so you can go.”
“I want you, Tony!” Gibbs snarled.
Tony just stared at him, mouth slack. “Did you not just hear what I said? Were you not listening?” He shook his head, almost muttering to himself, “No, of course you weren’t. It’s you, and it’s me, what else did I expect?”
Gibbs winced at the words. “Tony, I’m sorry.”
Tony let loose a slightly hysterical laugh. “Sorry? You’re sorry? No you aren’t. You never apologise, especially not about unimportant things.”
“What the hell made you think you were unimportant?” Gibbs asked impatiently, glaring at him.
“Uh, you? I know I’m replaceable, so why the hell are you here? You could walk into any club and pick up a willing fuck buddy.”
“It wasn’t just sex!” Gibbs growled in frustration.
“Yes it was! You said it yourself, it was never going to be more than casual sex. And I’m sorry, Gibbs, but I’m really not into the polygamous thing, so.”
“It was more than sex, Tony. You know it was.” Gibbs said quietly.
Tony sighed tiredly. “Whatever, Gibbs. I don’t wanna hear it.” He took in a deep breath. “If you ever cared about me, even for a moment, leave now. Don't look back, just leave.”
Gibbs hesitated, watching Tony carefully, but Tony avoided his eyes, staring at a loose thread in his pants, picking it at with his thumb. “If that’s what you really want, Tony.”
Tony nodded. “It’s what I really want.”
“Okay. I- alright.” Gibbs watched Tony a moment longer, then walked to the door with dragging footsteps. “I am sorry, though.”
“Yeah,” Tony agreed, fighting hard to keep the sob from his voice without much success.
Gibbs nodded curtly, and walked out the door, closing it softly behind him. Standing out in the hall of Tony’s apartment building, standing in front of his door, Gibbs was suffused with a flush of anger, and scowling, he turned right back around, slamming the door open and stomping straight back into Tony’s apartment, only to hear heart-breaking sobs as Tony curled onto the couch and cried into a cushion. Abruptly, the anger drained away, and he moved quietly to Tony, dropping to his knees in front of the other man. He ran a gentle hand over Tony’s hair, tangling his fingers in the soft locks. “Hey,” He said.
“I thought I told you to leave,” Tony sat up again, wiping furiously at the wet stains on his face, trying his best to school his expression into neutrality.
“You did. I did. I came back.” Gibbs smirked- no, smiled. “Let me explain about Janine,” Tony opened his mouth to protest, and Gibbs clamped one hand gently over his mouth. “no, let me talk. Janine is the only one I still talk to, you know that. And she just broke up with her boyfriend. She came around to my place, and we drank a little, and she kissed me. And I shouldn’t have kissed her back, I know that, but I’d had schnapps, and you know I can’t handle that. It never went past kissing, I promise. I swear, Tony, that was all. I’m sorry.” He took a deep breath, reminding himself of what he had to lose. “I love you, Tony.”
“No, you don’t,” Tony denied wetly, sniffing.
Gibbs closed his eyes tiredly. “DiNozzo, you know I only have the best on my team, and the best in my bed. When I have a relationship, I don’t do it half-arsed. Hell, three divorces should have taught you that. It was never just sex, not for me. I just…didn’t want to scare you away.”
Tony laughed, the sound clogged with tears. “Scare me away? You couldn’t if you tried.”
Gibbs smiled, a small thing. “That’s good to know.” He raised his eyebrow archly. “Would’ve been better to know before.”
“Yeah, well.” Tony said. He sniffed again, taking a deep breath and letting it out. “I don’t usually break down like that. Sorry.”
“Don’t apologise,” Gibbs said, and Tony recited the next line with him. “It’s a sign of weakness.”
“Am I forgiven?” Gibbs asked quietly.
Tony hesitated, then nodded. “Yeah. But don’t do it again!” He warned fiercely.
Gibbs nodded seriously. “I won’t. I swear.” He leaned in to kiss Tony’s cheek. “Listen, I, uh, I thought about this, and I think I might know what the problem was.”
“Yeah?” Tony asked sceptically.
“Yeah. We went straight too sex, we didn’t get to really know each other first. Like, I don’t even know who your friend was, and you don’t know about my cousin Lilah, who picks me up sometimes.”
Tony smirked. “Oh, subtle. That was my buddy Oliver. We’ve known each other since college, and we’re pretty close. We had sex a couple of times in college, and once or twice since then, usually after bad break ups. He’s a cool guy. I’ll introduce you next time.”
“Nothing serious, then?”
“Gibbs! I told you I wasn’t into polygamy.”
“Okay.” Gibbs smiled. “So, tomorrow, dinner and a movie?”
Tony grinned back at the older man. “I’d love to.” He made an amused face. “I’m going on a date with second-b-is-for-bastard Gibbs.”
Gibbs scowled. “Do you have a problem with that?”
Tony smiled affectionately. “Nope. Not at all.”
