The thing is, Harry's never been very good at being horrible to people. Which has never been a problem, to be honest; he's a strong believer in treating people how you'd want to be treated yourself, and Harry doesn't think he'd much enjoy people treating him like shit. So it's never been difficult to smile and charm everyone he meets, even when he's feeling tired and overworked and stressed. No, even then, Harry can smile like a million dollars and say just the right thing to make a person feel special.

Feeling like you want to snap at someone who's being a twat, though, is different to wanting to feel like you want to snap at someone totally innocent. Some sweet girl who's travelled from some small town on the border of New York state, a carrot drawn on her cheek in Sharpie pen and an album clutched to her chest like she's worried another one of the hundreds of girls is going to snatch it out of her hands. She can't be more than thirteen, fourteen at a push, and she'll grow into her looks, Harry thinks. He's silent as they leave the mall, as they walk across the tarmac car park, deserted in the early evening now that all the fans and their mothers have been shepherded away, towards the big, gleaming black tour bus. He's silent as they clamber inside and walk single file towards the back, where the small sort-of-living room is. He doesn't speak as they fall into their designated spots, himself automatically finding his space between Louis and Zayn on the sofa. He's dribbled all over his pillow in his sleep, a sure sign he was both sleeping deeply and also snoring heavily, and his mouth tastes sour and thick. His mattress moves gently beneath him and he shakes off the usual nausea of motion-sickness, as he buries his face in the dry half of his pillow and ignores the fact that he's half-hard. 'Too early in the morning for this, El,' Louis says and he groans it out a bit, which, bizarrely, just takes Harry back to that fucking girl yesterday, groaning that she loved him. His face twists in disgust and, too late, he realises Louis is staring at him with raised eyebrows.

'Sorry,' he mouths silently. Louis just shrugs carelessly.

'Babe, gonna have to go back to my bed at this rate,' Louis continues, as though Harry really isn't there. 'Yeah, I know, it's late, you should get some sleep.' Harry frowns down at his dark, stewed tea, thinking it's a weird conversation and why didn't Louis take it back up to his bunk much earlier than this? Also, what was Eleanor doing winding him up like that and then just hanging up? Harry doesn't know why, but he feels like, if it were him (and why would it be, Harry, you don't sit on the phone to him getting him sexually frustrated when you're apart, do you?) he would feel some kind of obligation to finish the job off ( ... )

Harry doesn't know why, but he doesn't take up Louis's first piece of advice. He's well aware that it's getting strange now; teenage boys don't not wank, it's not normal. He's feels strange when he thinks about it, but then when he's alone in his bunk, or when he's in the shower in a hotel, he goes to touch himself and ... he doesn't want to. 'You shouldn't have treated her like that,' Harry mumbles. He doesn't ever really stand up to Louis; that's Zayn's job and maybe Liam's, while Niall's never really bothered either way. Bitching is like water off a duck's back to Niall and he hardly notices whether Louis's in a good or bad mood, it doesn't affect him. Harry doesn't like to upset Louis, though. Harry knows this is wrong. That it's the first time he's gotten accidentally hard in what might be weeks, other than on waking up in the morning, and that the reason is because he's imagining his best friend sneering and being cruel and mean. Harry's not sure if he wants the sneer to be directed at himself or not, and he spends a good five minutes debating over this because at least then the fantasy isn't progressing any further, but then he's soaping down his body and it's not as if he can't wash down there and ...

Well, it all falls apart then, really.

They don't talk about it. Not that there's much to talk about. Harry's trying to force the fact that he wanked off to thoughts of Louis, what, treating him badly? He's still not even quite sure what kind of kink that would be called. Louis himself, meanwhile, wishes he could get the words "treat me any way you like" out of his mind, along with trying to think up ways to get Harry back into that soft, dopey place where he splays out over Louis like an oversized house cat.

It turns out to be easier than he thinks.
