This is the first Unicorn Club book I’ve ever recapped, which is weird because this is the SV series I’ve read most of. I’ve read 22 out of its 23 books, or 95.65% of the series (yes, I worked it out mathematically, yes, I know it’s sad).

Mandy has cancer. Jessi is black. But Rachel is black. So cancer trumps black in Awful Things That Can Happen To You? And malnutrition isn't all that serious. And you can pimp teen idols. The logic of this SVUniverse, it is astounding.

But she did look…well…pretty darned clean. And that was a good start for a model.

Actually, Lila, according to Fashion Babylon, models can be pretty skanky. There was this bit that said one model got period blood all over the gusset of this dress she was modelling and gave the next model to wear it thrush, and another model got lice from a dress that someone else had been modelling. The more you know.

Also: "You look so...young!" "And you look so...clean!"

Mandy walks in for some reason and gives a speech about her cancer (why is that always brought up?)

I also loved the Unicorn Club though I only read the first ten books - this, however, sounds truly awful. And the first person POV was the thing I liked best about them! Great recap though :)

Oh man, I never read beyond the first ten or so Unicorn Club books. This one sounds truly insane! I can't believe they wrote a book about body image aimed at teenage girls which didn't have a message about the evils of eating disorders at the end. I think even the first Robin Wilson book ended up with Robin being all, "Yeah, I'm hot and popular now, but you suck, Jessica Wakefield."

Then Ellen comes out of nowhere and gasps and is like “What happened? You look awful, Katherine!” And the other girls are like “Oh, Ellen!”
I love Ellen so much. I think she might actually be my very favourite SVT/UC member.
