It does make me wonder exactly what our fellow citizens are doing, abroad, when people are shocked (Shocked, I tell you!) that we can be nice. o_O
Years ago, when I was flying home from France, when they were passing out the forms, the (French) flight attendant gave me an immigration form, rather than a customs form. When I asked for the correct one, she said, "Oh! I'm sorry! From your manners, I didn't realize you were American!"
I know! I have seen/experienced more rudeness here from other nationalities than I have from Americans. It baffles me that people are so baffled when they encounter a polite American. It's like the earth is off-kilter or something!
