"Prison inmates." She leafed through the file as they got on the elevator, pulling out a photograph. "Some are a lot more adept at passing through walls than we thought. Others, well... you can see for yourself."

Prison violence had escalated recently, since more than one inmate discovered he or she could move with unprecedented speed or freeze a man simply by touching him. The photograph she'd handed Jamie was of a man's body, charred.

"The problem, though, seems to be that they're happy where they are. We can't move them."

"Lord," Jamie muttered, staring at the picture, a bit of his drawl creeping into his voice.

Handing it back to her, he shook his head in confusion. "Am I missing something? If we can't move 'em, then what do they expect us to do about it?"

"Sort it out." They'd failed to mention how. "Normals are putting pressure on the government, the media's running away with the story." Nothing made headlines better these days than the word 'special' combined, if possible, with the word 'murder' or 'assault'.

"Dammit," Jamie swore as they exited the elevator. "They never focus on any of the good, do they?"

It was all the fault of the stupid resistors. They claimed to be fighting for the rights of people like them, when all they were doing was making it more dangerous for everybody involved. Jamie grit his teeth, tucking his hands back in his pockets.

"If a dupe gets shanked or something, I'm going to be pissed," he muttered, trying to cover for the fact that a prison visit really was kind of terrifying.

"I'll try to keep your pretty ass unscathed," she assured him, not all that concerned about the prison. She was more worried about how they were going to fix any of this. It wasn't like she'd been given a manual when they'd joined and Company procedure only got you that far.

"Our main priority is in keeping them off the streets. As long as they're locked up, at least they're killing criminals."
