"Nothing will happen." She studied the desk intently, working a nail into the chipped wood. "They're gathering intel."

In Washington, she wanted to add, but that was already too much information. She had no doubt Jimmy could do the job. If anything, he would be too careful.

Jamie frowned at her. "They told you?"

That kind of stung. Why had no one told him?

"They didn't," she replied, glancing up. "Jimmy wanted me to know he was reachable in case things went wrong on our mission." She shrugged. "I think he was hoping I'd return the favor."

Jamie's eyes widened as he shot to his feet, nearly knocking his chair over. "You know where they are," he accused, clenching his hands into fist at his sides.

We're not going after them, she wanted to say.

"They're fine, Jamie," she answered instead, a warning in her voice, as her fingers drummed a beat on the desk. We can't go after them.
