"I'm not what?" he challenged, taking a step toward the boy instead of away. He reasoned that the closer he stood, the less this kid looked like Teddy, but that was just motherfucking gradeschool of him.

And what was that goddamn static he kept sensing?

Joey straightened a bit, automatically taking a step back.

"I was gonna ask if you had drugs but that's none of my business, and she's not a drug dog anyway and ...I'm gonna go. Now," he got out, hastily attaching the the leash to Ginger's collar again.

He set her down, turning hastily, and giving the leash a jerk when she tried to head back. He was too busy trying to get the hell away to notice the way the sign-light on the store he passed flickered.

The flickering caught his attention and he stared at the sign for a long moment, wondering just what in the hell was going on.

"I don't have drugs actually," he said, patting himself down briefly as if he wasn't sure. His eyes focused on that sign and then on the kid's retreating form. Fuck--had he seen that? "Wait... did you see that?"

Don't turn around, you moron.

Joey turned around, Ginger straining against the leash and glanced over to where the guy was looking. The sign blinked at him mockingly. He grimaced and looked away.

"What, that? Probably needs to get replaced."

The sign flickered brightly before going dark. He untangled himself from the leash and tried to leave again. He wasn't stopping again until he got to his apartment, no way.

Was that... guilt? Interesting. But why would this kid feel guilty for a flickering sign? Maybe he was just reading too fucking much into this thing but somehow he didn't think so.

"It looks brand new to me," he confessed, feigning complete innocence just to see the boy's reaction. "Don't you find it a little strange...?"
