The Very First Recs Post

This post is to recommend some movies written and/or directed by POC.

I'll start:

I really enjoyed Shaolin Soccer, directed by Stephen Chow and written by Stephen Chow and Kan-Cheung Tsang. It's a silly martial arts movie about a group of former Shaolin Temple novices who form a soccer team in order to go up against Team Evil. No, really. Team ( Read more... )

Just joined the comm. I loved Shaolin Soccer, and the way it played with a whole range of genre cliches (yet managed to have its own poignant narratives...). My sis saw it on the film festival circuit where it was a great hit.

I recced this com to my flist earlier today. In my post I mentioned Iranian director Majid Majidi and his two films The Color of Heaven and Children of Paradise. They're two of the finest films I've ever seen, and in general it's my hope that more people can experience gentle, beautiful, compassionate works of art by Muslim voices. I'm shocked by how deeply the image of hateful Muslims permeates American society. Even one of my ex-boyfriends (he didn't know I was Muslim at the time) who is a very well-educated and kind man said stiffly "I try not to have any opinion on Muslims" when Islam came up in conversation one day.

Ranting a bit now, sorry.

Also: I remember the English dub of Shaolin Soccer as being pretty good and really funny, but, well, I was around thirteen at the time, and God knows thirteen-year-old boys aren't the greatest arbiters of taste.

I really love The Host. It's a Korean monster movie about a dysfunctional family questing to get one of its members back -- Godzilla meets Little Miss Sunshine. Seriously. It's scary and hilarious and moving. It also gets some good digs in at white Americans -- they polluted the river that spawns the monster, and when a white American soldier gets sick, they shut down the whole area and the news runs constant updates on his condition, as you watch dozens of Koreans getting eaten or dragged away. The American military also
gives the main character a lobotomy! But it actually seems to make him smarter.

My icon is from House of Flying Daggers. I don't remember it that well, but it's beautiful, it stars Zhang Ziyi, and it's about spies.

The director, Zhang Yimou, also made Hero, which I like better. It's also absolutely gorgeous. A nameless man (Jet Li) goes to the king with the weapons of three famous assassins, who he says he's killed. It's one of those movies with stories-within-stories, conflicting narratives, and unreliable ( ... )
