The Very First Recs Post
This post is to recommend some movies written and/or directed by POC.
I'll start:
I really enjoyed Shaolin Soccer, directed by Stephen Chow and written by Stephen Chow and Kan-Cheung Tsang. It's a silly martial arts movie about a group of former Shaolin Temple novices who form a soccer team in order to go up against Team Evil. No, really. Team Evil.
Basically the plot goes as you'd expect-- I mean, there are several matches, there's a girl, the man behind Team Evil chews on the scenery-- but Stephen Chow, who also plays the lead, is charming, the acting is generally good, and the fight scenes and visual effects are very well-planned and executed. This movie succeeds in being funny most of the time, and in being fun when it isn't funny.
Note: I have only seen this film on a DVD imported from Hong Kong; I haven't seen the American DVD release, and I heard rumors that that release may have had some cuts and that the English dub wasn't terribly good. Your mileage may, therefore, vary.
