The Woman in the Mirror

You sigh deeply as you look in the mirror. Your appearance has not changed. The same blue eyes and auburn hair, nose, mouth, cheeks and chin are reflected back at you. But due to recent revelations, the woman in the mirror is a stranger. “Who are you?” you ask her, but she doesn’t answer you, and you realize that answers are all you really want.

You study the reflection for a long moment, analyzing before you come to your conclusion. This woman is in ‘limbo’, a Jane Doe. She needs a name. You steady yourself, and then you begin.

The facts tell you that she is Joy Keenan, daughter of Max and Ruth Keenan, and sister to Kyle Keenan. Her parents robbed banks while she and her brother were oblivious, sleeping in their beds at night. They were fugitives, liars and criminals. Not to be trusted. Yet your heart tells you that she is Doctor Temperance Brennan, a forensic anthropologist at the Jeffersonian Institute. A strong, intelligent, independent woman with an amazing best friend, a wonderful partner a promising assistant and incredible co-workers. She is a capable and strong woman, and other than her dark past and emotional scars, which weigh heavily on her heart, she is happy.

A large part of you knows that this woman is whoever you want her to be, and a larger part of you wants-and part of you knows-that she is Temperance Brennan. She is not a lie because she is who you are. But there is always that small confused and vulnerable part of you that wonders if you’re just kidding yourself. That part of you is the part that is so uncertain of who she is and what is going on that you are afraid that your world will crumble underneath your feet. Unfortunately, it’s the part that’s in control.

Tears threaten to spill as you come to the realization that you are no further along emotionally as you were when you first started staring at the stupid piece of glass, and you fear that things will only get worse. A knock sounds at the door and you figure that it’s Booth who saw your lights from the road and decided to check up on you. You compose yourself by breathing deeply, tinting your head back and blinking away the tears. Maybe Booth can help you…like he’s done so much already.
