Ridiculous & Absurdities

Jun 07, 2008 22:43

I stumbled across DisbeliefNet.com today.  It will tell you all about burka swimsuits, kosher cell phones that charge extra on the Sabbath, why Mohammed invented diapers, and why Christian Yoga is good for you.

And in other news ... who wants to watch Religulous when it comes to a theatre near you?

politics, faith

who wants to watch Religulous when it comes to a theatre near you?

Well, I do now!

I'm wondering how he got rights on a DC Talk song. If DC Talk doesn't own the rights, ForeFront records owns the rights to it and they're a Christian music label; both are Christian. Though not surprising, how disappointing to hear someone of that conviction sold out to contribute to a work making a mockery of Christianity.

Bill Maher excels at turning redundancy into money. Good job Bill, once again you've proved that unintelligent and simple people are not as intelligent as you and made lots of money doing it.

Is there any particular point you're trying to make or just trying to get the ball rolling converting this community to convert_me as a pit where atheists sit around disrespecting and mocking religion while any intelligent religious person sees clearly it's a waste of their time attempting to participate and leaves?

The point is that much of religious belief is Ridiculous. Period. As far as making mockery of Christianity, for one, even from the brief trailer, it seems that Muslin=ms and Jews are by no means exempt. The title isn't 'Ridicuchrist.' And second, Christianity makes quite a sufficient mockery of itself.

Did I ever say Christianity?

There's the difference between believing something is ridiculous, and mocking those who have those beliefs in a community that is supposed to be about open and intelligent conversation between said beliefs. I believe the idea that we came from a puddle of sludge is ridiculous. I believe the idea that the laws of the universe came about on their own, or that the universe began itself are ridiculous; the idea of order coming about arbitrarily doesn't fit with any system of naturalism we know.

However I don't think it's appropriate to go about posting links or images ridiculing those beliefs in a community that's supposed to be about open discussion. The beginning of mockery over respect is the end of the open mind and open discussion. The reason most of the non-atheistic/agnostic people left convert_me is because there's nothing productive or interesting about having your friends page riddled with jokes at the expense of yourself or others with beliefs you respect. Just pointing out, that the allowance of posts ( ... )

Yes, you did! "contribute to a work making a mockery of Christianity."

I believe the idea that we came from a puddle of sludge is ridiculous.

But dust + god-spit is neither a puddle of sludge nor ridiculous?

The OP asked if anyone was planning on seeing the movie - I'd hardly call that active mockery, any more than posting to ask if anyone had seen Expelled, regardless of the content of the film. As far as the website, the OP merely said they found it, and offered no commentary upon it, positive of negative. Not exactly commentary, eh?

I dunno about Muhammad inventing diapers but what's the beef with the other things?

If I knew what religulous was about I'd be a bit more excited I think.

If you want, you can go read about the other things at disbeliefnet.com. You might get a good laugh from some of it. As for Religulous, go ahead and watch the trailer, and then you can see how excited you get. Enjoy watching! I found the trailer amusing at times.

I'm an idiot and didn't realize that you had linked to the trailer (I was looking for it at the disbelief website) but yeah it does look like it'll be a bit of romp. Bill Mahr's a pretty funny dude, I just hope it's smart and not a blatantly antitheist "you beleev in gud, lolz u dum" picture.

I have long sinced ceased (sadly) to be surprised by the inane drivel people will believe.
And, yes, I will TOTALLY see Religulous when it comes out. I will probably even pay full price...

(The only reason I haven't seen Expelled is that, 'know thy enemy' aside, I will not give that film a dime if I can help it...)

lol, Maher's an imperialist, racist, fake lolbertarian tool. I could not possibly sit through his movie without throwing something. Maybe I'll read reviews for it first, see if he kept most of his bs out of it...but that probably doesn't happen.

*won't happen.

Uh... where are you getting Maher being an imperialist, racist, or that he's not actually a libertarian?

From what he says? He doesn't even try to hide the fact an American interventionist/supremacist and Zionist who doesn't know shit about history and randomly goes on tirades about "the Arabs" and he's definitely for profiling them.

WRT fake libertarianism...well he's pro-government intervention, especially with respect to foreign policy and then intervening in issues of gun control, and the environment, he's pro-public schools an universal healthcare, ffs...about the only things he's "libertarian" on are drugs, social security and prostitutes, he just likes the label because it makes him feel edgy or something. Or maybe he genuinely thinks he's a libertarian, and has no idea wtf that word means.
