An active priesthood holder that doesn't get married by the time that they're 30 is severely looked down upon; it's considered incredibly selfish of them.
Footballer Steve Young was given A LOT of crap about not getting married sooner.
Also: the Osmonds are filled with jerks, true story. ;)
Unfortunately, this isn't that different than most orthodox religions. I guess the big difference is that unlike Protestantism or Judaism, there isn't a more liberal/reform branch.
Oddly enough, Orthodox Judaism doesn't have a problem with Lesbian behavior. (Proving once and for all that G-d is a He).
Out of curiosity, what's the LDS stance on suicide? (Apologies if you've covered this before)
It makes me think of the Catholic Church, where sure you can be gay, you just can't act like it. And masturbation is a sin, and sex for purposes other than procreation is a sin, and lying is a sin, so basically all you're left with is being celibate and offering up your suffering to God. You might think that going into the priesthood would be an ideal solution, but the Church is trying to get the icky gays out of there. (Lesbians, like bisexuals, don't exist apparently)
And with all that suicide is a sin. As Rev. Lovejoy says, we're really not even allowed to go to the bathroom
( ... )
I'll have to pull out my handbook (no, really) and double check, but I'm pretty sure that suicide is the lesser sin. It's still pretty terrible, however, but I think homosexuality is one of their "grave sins." And like you were saying, the LDS church is now saying "Ok, you feel gay. Just don't do ANYTHING about it, and when you're resurrected, you'll magically like the opposite sex, problem solved!"
Lesbianism doesn't come up much in anything with the LDS church. Hmm, I wonder why that is...
And your last sentence: that's kind of the point, yeah. You'll be in "spirit Prison" (the LDS version of limbo) until the Second Coming, but you get that extra chance to make good and rejoin God in the penthouse suite.
Yeah, see, that's better than the Catholic church's stance on suicide. Suicide is one of the WORST THINGS you can do. Go to Hell, go directly to Hell, there's a firepit waiting for you.
(Basically the idea was that since God's greatest gift to you was giving you life, suicide was you throwing that gift back in God's face, so straight down you go.)
So to me, who grew up Catholic, the idea of being at least in some kind of limbo until the next phase of afterlife would seem downright welcoming. Comparatively, anyway.
