Some random polygamy commune talk

Jan 08, 2009 10:29

And further discussion on why the state of Utah will not go after these law breakers, and bad, irresponsible journalism.

Oh, Brooke Adams, you are such a toady for the polygamists. )

rant, polygamy, oh my heck!

Whenever I see articles like this that throw a boatload of statistics at people (knowing most of them will have their eyes glaze over as the numbers go on and on, so that in the end they come away thinking they've seen real proof of some assertion even when they haven't), I recall something a former colleague used to say: Liars figure and figures lie.

It's amazing how many times I've found that little phrase to be true.

My favorite joke of all time is this: 76% of statistics are made up.

(I change the number every time to make it funnier to me.) And yeah - as Metallica once sad, you know it's sad, but true.

Jesus. Only proves that statistics can be used to tell lies and damned lies. And do none of the reporters these days learn how to actually read statistics? Christ Almighty. Percentages mean shit without hard numbers and comparators (i.e. FLDS members versus your average Utahian as you yourself point out).

On an semi-amusing note, I can "hear" your tone in this one. It's the same tone I use whenever the media spectacularly fucks up reporting on the latest clinical study. I just thought I'd point it out because I'm glad I'm not the only one who throws up my hands at the stupdity.

You know, I wish I could point and laugh at Utah and the FLDS and the mainstream LDS, but...

Let me just say: Massachusetts and the Roman Catholic Church and pedophile priests. Granted, the Boston Globe eventually broke this shit wide open, and granted, the Catholic Church's can't do nothing for shit in the state any more (in other words, voters are starting to vote against whatever stance the RCC takes). But, still, I know of a few pedo priests who are ( ... )

I knew this would rile you up. Keep in mind that she's been a water-carrier for the Plygs for YEARS.

And hahaha - yeah, I get an edge to me when I'm confronted with apparent stupidity like that. BAH.

There was a fantastic (and disturbing) multi-chapter article the Dallas Morning News did a year or so back on pedo-priests and how the Catholic Church shunts them around to keep it quiet. Poor Mexico - it's where they all seem to end up. I'll see if I can't find it for you - it was well written and very interesting.

At least the one who did it in our little village is in jail. And man, did he leave a lot of broken up families behind. And stained glass windows that he gathered up donations for, so every time those people walk into that church and see those glorious windows, they don't exactly focus on the glory of God first.

A lot of them came over to my former church 'cause they couldn't look at the windows anymore. It was like having to relive the horror all over again.

In related news - did you catch that two of the leaders of the FLDS compound in British Columbia were arrested on polygamy charges? It's uncertain whether they can successfully be prosecuted for that, but they might end up facing time for sexual exploitation of minors.

I did! Another reader alerted me to that late last night. Uncle Wink finally going to jail... That'll scare some sense into a small percentage of them, he's been blatant about what he's been doing for YEARS.

Haven't finished reading but will forget this note if I don't say it: You've got "sense" in one place where you mean "since." I thought I was the only one who screwed that up.

Got it - and for the record, this is just a blog post, not an essay or anything professional.

I try to restrain my inner editor for blog post-y things: I wouldn't have pointed it out if it wasn't a "Wow! I'm not the only one who makes that typo!" thing. (It bugs me when I do it, because I try not to have "in" and "en" sound the same in my speech, and when it bleeds into my typing it means my speech isn't careful.)

It makes me so angry, particularly, to see the people in that trailer all 'something must be done!' but - what's being done? Nothing.

And children are being brainwashed and abused, and women are breaking under the pressure and becoming what they fear and the men seem to just be getting fat on it all.
