This may seem weird, but a lot of people in my life don't know yet that I am no longer a vegetarian. It feels weird to even say "I'm not a vegetarian."

I originally thought of this as a possibly-temporary experiment. But for now, at least, it looks like it is going to be a permanent change. Though I am not happy about it, I feel better when I eat ( Read more... )

Frankly, I'd say something along the lines of "I'd really prefer to stay vegetarian, but because I've developed insulin resistance, I have to eat some meat in order to be healthy. I'm really limiting what I'm eating and only doing what's medically indicated, though, so if it's OK with you, I'd rather just bring my own meat dish for the holidays. I'd love to bring enough to share, if you guys are interested in the recipe I'm thinking of trying!"

That way, it's less about being "picky" (and getting into a potential argument about ethical sourcing/etc.), and more saying "Hey, I'm specifically doing this for my health, and I need to be in charge of sourcing/preparing my meat items because I'm following a strict diet to try to get the insulin resistance under control."
