Trying to translate Sophocles makes me feel so stupid.

Labeling intervals strongly reminds me of something else, but I can't figure out what it is. Possibly labeling more intervals. Or doing greek. That could be it. The laborious deciphering of each word with reference to various rules, followed by the hunt for repeats, followed by deciphering words that look like they might be similar, since I'm in ( Read more... )

I am really quite flummoxed by Oedipus Tyrannos (lines 435-446). I don't know if I'm just really bad at parsing, or if Sophocles just uses weird conjugations or something. Or both. But the commentary is no help- what exactly is "historical present" supposed to tell me? Is it a tense? And if so, how does one English* that ( Read more... )

I was parsing my Oidipous this morning when I came across the entry for "meno" in the lexicon. As a verb, it means, among other things, "to stay or remain in a condition" or "to be unchanged".

I have won the battle, but not the war. In fact, I may not even have won the battle, because I kind of fail at greek, and while I have a translation of the first 8 lines of Oedipus Rex that is at least internally coherent, I don't know how much connection it actually has with, y'know, the greek I'm translating from.
