Wow...

Dec 30, 2007 00:28

I'm officially thirty-four years old.  According to the clock in the lower right corner of my monitor (and there's no reason to doubt it, technology being what it is now) as of this typing I have been thirty-four for twenty-nine minutes.  That's... weird.  And good.  And sort of scary, and a dozen other things all rolled in one.  I honestly didn't think in my late teens and early twenties that I'd still be around for the ride at this point.  Man, am I glad I was wrong about that one.

There are things about me that haven't changed a bit over the years.  I'm still a die-hard Oakland Athletics fan (which is being sorely tested by management's trading of ace pitcher Dan Haren) right down to the root.  I still love a good flannel shirt, the best of which can be found at L.L. Bean's.  Eddie Bauer is nice, but it's also overpriced.  I still believe that Slayer was one of the best bands ever and never got the due they so richly deserved.  I still love Halloween as my favorite holiday of the year and I still type two-finger in a rapid hunt and peck that over the years I have refined to an art form that let's me do fifty words a minute... and that's after the mistakes have been factored in.

Other things, completely different.  It turned out that I was a pickup truck guy and not a sports car guy.  I'm not nearly as liberal as I have believed myself to be over the years, although my loathing of the labels "conservative" and "liberal" is still enough to raise my hackles.  I prefer to call them "people wearing party-themed colored blinders."  I don't smoke cigarettes any more.  I no longer look at Chico as the dark-themed place I had held it to be for years, and have finally exorcised my ghosts that haunted me for so long.

Most of all, I still write.  I started my first novel at one in the morning on Christmas Day, 1989, and eighteen years later I am still firmly in the saddle.  I'm going to do a roll call, so  I'll put the list of books behind a cut so as not to clog your page.

I'm still here, ladies and gentlemen.  So on that note, a happy 2008 to us all.
