Until a few days ago, I hadn't been to the Veteran's Hospital in about six months.  The most striking thing I noticed was how many more amputees there were.  It used to be that most of the amputees were old diabetics; they probably still account for the highest percentage, but there were quite a few younger amputees this time around.  Missing an arm, missing both legs...it's ugly.

There was a young dental student from the local college doing clinical work there.  While she was working on my cleaning, she mentioned that she was thinking about joining the military and asked my opinion.  When I said she might not want to  do that if she wants to keep all of her limbs, she didn't understand what I meant.  When I told her to look around at all of the amputees in the hospital, she got quiet and didn't ask any more questions.
