Well, Buzzy and I have been moved into our new digs for a little over a week now. We signed the lease last Saturday, moved our stuff from Steph and Taylor's old apartment, and then rode with Taylor up to Corvallis, where Buzzy's sister Robyn and Robyn's fiance Travis willingly gave up their Sunday to help us move. We fit all our stuff in the smallest possible U-Haul with room to spare, and all told it took only a few hours to unload and unpack almost everything. We also had help from family friends Mel and Luke, who recently moved to Portland themselves. We're still getting settled in, which is kind of stressful, but I'm so glad we finally have a place to call our own. It feels quite cozy with our little bed and loveseat and twinkle lights.
Rob, Buzzy and I rode back to Corvallis with Mel and Luke on Wednesday after work. We made a delicious Thanksgiving dinner with Robyn and Travis: my family's traditional homemade Tofurkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, yams with and without marshmallows, stuffing, peas, pumpkin pie, and Rob's family's traditional cranberry orange nut bread. We felt pretty darn accomplished, and everything was delicious. Last night we had some other Corvallis friends over for a leftovers potluck and games, and it was great just to be with so many friendly people for the holidays.
This year more than ever, I am aware of how much I have to be thankful for. This entry alone shows that I continually count on the loving support of friends and extended family. Though we're all feeling the effects of the economy, we take care of each other as best we can. I'm thankful especially for everyone who has helped me move to Portland, including my family, Catherine's family, Buzzy's family, Steph, Taylor, Rob, and Buzzy. Thanks to their patient generosity, we're able to have our own space and hope for the future.
I'm also particularly thankful this year that my social life in Portland is thriving. I feared possibly becoming alienated when I moved to a new city, but that hasn't been the case at all. Since I moved, I've been to two housewarming potlucks, taught some amazing unschoolers how to cook without recipes (I've only had one meeting so far, but it went fantastically, and I hope there will be many more), made bagels and watched movies with my awesome coworker Julia, gone salsa dancing with my coworkers Julia and Nikki, shared wandering/brunch/good conversation with Lasa's daughter Jess (
meshach) when she came to Portland on a random weekend road trip, seen Coyote Grace live in North Portland with Mel, Luke, and Steph... The list goes on. I am truly blessed to know so many wonderful people who have helped me have the time of my life this fall.
On that note, leave a comment if you want me to let you know why I am thankful to have you in my life, even just as an LJ friend. (In the interest of honesty, it may take awhile for me to respond, since we don't have internet at the apartment yet. But it will happen. I love you all.)
