i had forgotten how comforting -

till i shared bed nightly
with a boy full foot taller -

how comforting to sleep
blanket over face.

A Thousand Goodbyes Each Time I See You (07.16.2004)

i hold people
the way i hold flat stones
smooth in my half-open fist
just before my wrist snaps them off
and they skip
skip skip plash.
the lake sends me
ripples only half-way back,
the epicenter
so far out.
