Is there a way to express "I want this/that" without specifying the noun in Chinese? 我想這／那 just sounds like ugly Chinglish.

What's the difference between 宵 and 晚 or 夜? I saw in a dictionary that 宵 means 夜, but there were also the phrase 今宵, which is supposed to mean "tonight". So, what's the difference between 今宵 and 今晚?

I've learnt that a cassette player is called 录音机. Then I went and bought a cassette player and both on the player and on the instruction to it it is called 复读机, or to be more specific, 语言复读机. I haven't found this word in my dictionary ( Read more... )

Both my phrasebooks and my dictionary say that postcard is ming2xin4pian4, but they spell it differently. Which is correct: 明信片 or 名信片? I'm learning Mandarin Chinese.

What differences, if any, do you feel there are between the terms 中文 and 汉语？ What steers you towards using one in a particular situation?

There's also 国语，中国话，and 普通话, but I guess they are not as general as the first two (国语 is only used in Taiwan AFAIK, I practically never hear people say 中国话, and 普通话 is more specifically just Mandarin).

Hi all,

I'm going over a transcript of a tv show and I can't figure out some of the phrases, even with my trusty dictionary. Any tips?

It's an interview with an actor about the virtues of cupping (拔罐儿 or 拔火罐). I'll bold the bits I can't make sense of. (张 is the interviewer, 韩 is the actor)
