Chapter 16: The Captive
Kate’s Point of View
I sat alone in the brig, listening to the rowdy crew above deck,
ZeldaQueen: Kind of makes it sound like they're having a party. Or, maybe a drunken orgy.
... You know, given what I know is in store for Jones, I shouldn't let my mind go there
watching as the moonlight danced across the water-blanketed floor. My sobs had subsided, though the familiar feeling of guilt had yet to falter.
ZeldaQueen: Okay, am I seriously supposed to believe she's some seasoned pirate girl who can kick butt with the rest of them? I feel the need to remind everyone that Elizabeth didn't get this sobby and weepy when she was in jail. She actually did stuff to get results!
Perhaps, if I hadn’t intervened, Jack would have taken care of this on his own. He’d gotten into trouble before and survived.
ZeldaQueen: YES. HE HAS SURVIVED FOR YEARS WITHOUT YOU. YET BECAUSE YOU ARE A MARY SUE, HE SUDDENLY FINDS HIMSELF INCAPABLE OF TAKING CARE OF HIMSELF AT ALL. I HATE YOU
Still, Davy Jones was a force to be reckoned with: I wouldn’t be surprised if he turned out to be the Devil himself.
ZeldaQueen: Funny, Jack took care of him fine in canon.
And didn't Jack already have a plan to deal with Jones in place, sending Will over and all? Kate just basically did the same thing and... okay, you know what? I am done with trying to figure out how the bargain was supposed to work. I give up
I glanced up upon hearing heavy footsteps in the doorway. In the light of the moon, I could see Bootstrap Bill walking towards me.
ZeldaQueen: Oh fuck no, I'm not looking forward to this. I think it's clear now that the Suethor hates poor Bootstrap
“What are you doing here?” I snapped.
ZeldaQueen: Bootstrap glared at her. "I'm here to kill you. I know that you've warped the fandom and took the position of 'protagonist' from my son. There's no place for you here". And then he impaled her
“I came to see how you’re doing.”
“Hang on, let me think. Let’s see…my husband is caught in a terrifying bargain that he can’t escape, I’m about to lose the man I love, and I’m caught in this brig! I do believe I’m bloody fine!”
ZeldaQueen: AND WHOSE FAULT IS THAT, YOU STUPID BINT?
This entire thing is all your and Jack's fault! Jack was the one who sold his soul for his ship and is now trying to skip on his payment. You were the one who traipsed on over with no plan other than "Hey Jones, how about a trade?", without even bringing a weapon of any sort to defend yourself! Stop acting like you are both innocent victims here! You know who are the innocent victims? WILL AND ELIZABETH!!! STOP IT!
Bootstrap sighed. “Kate, I know you’re still upset with me.”
I looked at him side-long. “Figure that out on your own?”
“Kate-”
ZeldaQueen: Fair warning to all, this next bit will enrage most of you
I jumped to my feet, glaring at him through the bars. “You betrayed Jack! You mutinied against him! He trusted you, Bootstrap!”
A look of remorse crossed his face, though I wasn’t sorry for what I had said. I had hated Bootstrap from the moment he betrayed Jack, and that hatred had continued for the past ten years.
ZeldaQueen: Right. Two things.
First.
HE DIDN'T MUTINY, YOU STUPID, STUPID BINT! HE DIDN'T! HE WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO THOUGHT IT WAS WRONG! WHERE DO YOU THINK THE PLOT FROM THE FIRST MOVIE CAME FROM? HE THOUGHT THAT THE PIRATES DESERVED TO BE CURSED FOR THE MUTINY, SO HE SENT WILL HIS MEDALLION! HE WAS DROPPED UNDERWATER BECAUSE HE REFUSED TO MUTINY! WHY DO YOU THINK HE'S ON THIS SHIP NOW? IT WAS THE ONLY WAY TO ESCAPE! AND NO, I REFUSE TO BELIEVE THAT KATE SIMPLY DIDN'T KNOW THAT BOOTSTRAP WASN'T INVOLVED IN THE MUTINY! SHE'S KNOWN EVERY SINGLE FUCKING THING ABOUT THE PLOT THUS FAR, WHY NOT THIS?
Second, what a fucking hypocrite! Spoilers, folks. When her dear Uncle Hector shows up at the end, she's all smiles and rainbows to him, even though he led the mutiny against Jack, purely out of greed! Oh, but he also showed up to get her back to Sparrow's cock, so I guess she'll let a little thing like starting the mutiny pass. Bootstrap, on the other hand, gave Jack the Mark, so never mind how much he sacrificed and suffered and lost, just because he stood up for his principles and didn't mutiny against Jack. The Sue has nothing but contempt for him!
“You look just like her,” he said softly, looking at me.
ZeldaQueen: *sputters* Excuse me? Bootstrap's just going to let her insult him like that? He's not going to tell her the truth? FUCK THIS SHIT!
I grew puzzled. “Who?”
“Sirena,” he answered. “Sirena Jones.”
My eyes widened. “I look like…his wife?”
ZeldaQueen: Okay, time out, how long ago was Jones married? In the movies, I got the implication that Jones loved Calypso waaaay long ago, well before Bootstrap joined the crew
He nodded. “He loved her more than the sea itself.
ZeldaQueen: I hate you. Just put up a sign that says "he loves the Sue more than Calypso", why don't you?
Yet she caused him so much pain and heartache…that’s why he was so angry when you came to trade your life for Jack’s.”
ZeldaQueen: And here I thought it was because she was a pretentious bitch who made arguments that were so full of straw, you could light 'em aflame with a hot glare
“You mean that Jones is jealous?”
ZeldaQueen: Of course he is. Your love with Jack is just So Much Better *rolls eyes*
“No. I mean that you remind him so much of Sirena. She was a brave woman; had seawater in her veins, she did. Even now, in the years since her murder, her memory still torments him. And your appearance reminded him of her, and he didn’t want to have to go through that pain again.”
ZeldaQueen: You know, we have exactly one chapter about Sirena, written in some aborted prequel. The only thing she does is get captured in battle by Jones, all while glaring prettily and have people chat up about her fearsome reputation. Yep, she sounds just like Kate
“I don’t love Davy Jones. I love Jack.”
ZeldaQueen: That won't stop you from having sweet, rubbery tentacle sex with him later.
I'm sorry, I just squicked myself out
As Bootstrap was about to reply, the door slammed, and the sound of heavy footsteps ensued. Davy Jones appeared, his beard of tentacles twisting and curling upon seeing me.
ZeldaQueen: Okay, now I really regret my last comment
“You,” he barked at me. “Up on deck.”
ZeldaQueen: Oh please, dear God, tell me they're throwing Kate overboard!
When I was released from the brig and ushered up on deck, I felt Jones push me to one of the masts.
“You’ve got to earn your keep, lass,” he hissed. “Haul canvas.”
ZeldaQueen: I have to ask, did Will just vanish, here?
I glared as he walked off, and turned to Bootstrap, who was standing next to me.
ZeldaQueen: So apparently Jones hates people who don't earn their keep, but is willing to just let Bootstrap stand around like an idiot
I turned to him.
ZeldaQueen: YOU SAID THAT ALREADY!
“I can’t stay. I have to find Jack.”
ZeldaQueen: And Will has to save Elizabeth. I notice you keep ignoring that one
“We’re in the middle of open sea at night. You have a better chance of getting eaten alive by a shark than finding your husband now. Wait until morning.”
ZeldaQueen: Okay, hold. They are in the middle of the ocean and the Pearl is nowhere in sight. Does Kate intend to slip away and go searching around the entire ocean in a rowboat?
“But-”
“I don’t think Jack wants to be the one to discover his wife’s dead body floating alongside the Pearl.”
ZeldaQueen: I would love to find the Sue's dead body. I'm not picky about location either!
A feeling of dread and terror flooded over me, and I realized that I was trapped, with no way to help or save my husband.
ZeldaQueen: He just said not to go running off at the middle of the night, not that you'd never escape.
And dear lord, will you stop that? If I hear you go on one more time about how you're never going to save Jack (who apparently has legally changed his name to "my husband"), I'm going to scream!
