"Don't peek." At that age, his tone was still so innocent.

"I won't, I won't." The girl sounded impatient, but she kept her eyes tightly closed. Her right hand was held open before her, awaiting whatever surprise the boy promised. She felt something tickle her palm, and her fingers twitched.

"Careful," the boy warned. "You'll smash it."

"Smash what?" Rangiku opened her eyes, blinking across at the silver-haired Gin before looking down at her hand. There, flapping silently on her palm, was a black butterfly. "Wow..."

"I found it while I was near the Seireitei. I think it was looking for somebody, but I caught it. Messed up one of the wings, though."

She looked closer, and saw that one of the wings wasn't moving just the way it should. "Gin, that's so cruel..."

His eyes darted from the small black insect to the watery eyes of his companion, and the tiny hint of a frown on her full lips. Swiftly, he took the butterfly into his hand and pressed his lips to hers. Anything to stifle that frown. Her eyes closed slowly, and she leaned toward him.

The butterfly flapped feebly in the cage of his fingers.

Sometimes funny things happened in Soul Society. This time, it was that a very late snow came along to mix with the blooming sakura. Matsumoto decided it was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen, and threw open the sliding door of Tenth Division's office.

"It's gorgeous!" She exclaimed, stretching her arms to the sky. She glanced over at her busy taichou knowingly before stepping out onto the walkway, putting a hand out to catch some of the falling snow.

"Matsumoto." Hitsugaya didn't glance up from his paperwork. "Get back to work."

...No response. He looked over at her, and his usual scowl softened a bit. On the walkway, his undeniably womanly vice-captain was gazing out wistfully into the garden below, looking for all purposes fully enchanted by the scene. An expression of almost childlike wonder graced her features. The white-haired shinigami frowned again, then rose from his seat. "Matsumoto," he repeated, a little louder, now from right behind her. She jumped. Just as she looked back, though, a pink scarf came to rest on the back of her neck. Their eyes met for a moment. "You'll catch cold."

She answered his words with a warm smile. Tugging the scarf around her shoulders, she shrugged. "I'll get back to work in a minute, I promise..."

Hitsugaya bristled. "Don't... worry about it." He let his own gaze wander out over the courtyard, full of cherry trees in full bloom, their light pink barely contrasting with the snow that lay on the ground. A carefully manicured hand tugged him gently closer to the railing, right beside his vice-captain. With a little smile and a hum, she tipped her head toward him and rested her cheek on his shoulder.
