Oh, wow, it has been 8 years? Time sure does flies.
Talking about Last Exile, I still remember those days when my jaw was literally on the floor when I saw the opening. Honestly though, that's essentially what defined Last Exile for me...the incredibly haunting opening.
It's true back then I was so engrossed by it, but I wonder how much percentage is because I was under the allusion the series gotta be awesome because of that opening. While it's not a bad show, I have never felt LE is as epic as everyone said. Half way through the show, I was bored. The ending reinforced my opinion that this is one of those show with pretty packaging and nothing else.
And of course it doesn't help that this is Gonzo...the infamous company who likes to make everything pretty in first few episodes, and the quality will become laughable when it reached episode 10. Not to mention the endings are usually so bad, it's funny. (Trinity Blood, Speed Grapher, Chrono Crusade come to mind) LE possessed all those common Gonzo problem, but it's not half as bad. Actually, LE is possibly the best Gonzo can come up with.
So Ginyoku no Fam is Gonzo's attempt to recover, and how does it fare?
I was pleasantly surprised. It certainly has a different flavor than the original, but I didn't mind it. I'm not one of those who think the original is the best thing ever, so I don't mind changes. The OP unfortunately isn't half as good as the original, but it's still decent. The characters so far are standard, but they all have room to grow. Dio is fun to watch, even more so than the original. What I didn't like is the Ojousama character, she's so generic and annoying. lol! Her stupid sidekick doesn't help.
Otherwise, I love the setting and the gorgeous animation---these two are the one that stood out from the original. I'm glad Ginyoku no Fam retains these qualities. If it can keep this up, I actually don't mind the revival of Gonzo.
P.S: Range Murata has mad design skillz!
First Impression: B+
