Views of Marseille (2)

This time it's not exactly Marseille but If, the smallest island of the Frioul Archipelago about a mile offshore of the town. The island is famous because the main character of The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas was imprisoned here. The fortress was built between 1524 and 1531 during the reign of Francis I. It became a prison later.

Between 1540 and 1750, 3500 Protestants who didn't want to renounce to their faith were condemned to row on galleys. Some of them were imprisoned at first into the fortress.

Abbot Faria's cell.

Of course Edmond Dantès is totally fictive but they fitted out a cell next to  abbot Faria's one.

They even dug a hole in the wall between both cells.

J-B Chataud was the captain of a ship which brought the plague in Marseille.

The Knight of Lorraine was the lover of Philippe d'Orléans, Louis XIV's brother. He was imprisoned at the request of Henriette of England, the first wife of Philippe d'Orléans but he's fast came back in favor.

Mirabeau's cell. At least there was a fireplace.

In fact, the Man in the Iron Mask wasn't prisonner here.

Brother Valère de Foenis was accused of being a crook and a heretic and was burned alive in 1588.
