Views of Marseille (3)

Today I 'm going to show photos of several places, in particular a district called Le Panier (The Basket). It's an old and popular quarter and you can see it in the movie Love Actually when Colin Firth fetches the woman he loves.

This is La Vieille Charité (The Old Charity). It's a former almshouse, now a museum.

Not in the same district but near Le Panier, here is the Marseille Cathedrale (Cathédrale de la Major) built in the XIX th Century (you can also see it in Love Actually)

The Pharo Palace was built for the empress Eugénie, Napoleon III's wife.

At the entrance of the Old Port there is also two fortresses.

Fort Saint-Jean was built in the XII th century by the Knights Hospitaller and it was strengthened later during Louis XIV's reign. In the same time another fortress was built: Fort Saint-Nicolas, on the other side of the port:

Officially it was to defend the city but in fact the two forts were there in response to an uprising and the cannons were pointed towards the town and not towards the sea.

The Old Port:

And to end for today, the Abbey of St. Victor:

In the background you can see the basilica Notre-Dame de la Garde. I'll try to go there this week. It is the most famous monument of the city and you can see all Marseille from there.
