Reading Wednesday

Finished reading: The Burying Ground by Janet Kellough. ...I was going to write a long thing about this, but I actually think I summed up my impressions of it decently in the previous entries, so. Scratch that. tl;dr: Decent but not amazing, worth a read if solving murders in mid-1800s Canada interests you. (Also: Nothing horrible happens to the gay character. Whoo!)

Also finished reading: The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton. I... really enjoyed this novel a lot. I love the setting (Amsterdam in the mid-1600s!), I love the touch of magic to everything, I love the layers and layers of relations and how everything is kind of one big mess. There are some things in it that I suspect others wouldn't like, but those things didn't bother me - sorry for vagueposting, but I'm having trouble articulating it in a coherent fashion. I actually do like Johannes and Nella's relationship, such as it is. Or, well - I mean, they're both in a shitty situation, and I sympathize with both of them. I guess that's a better way to put it.

Currently reading: The Life of Elves by Muriel Barbery, translated by Alison Anderson. The subject isn't one that typically interests me - it's one of those "two magical forces fighting to control the world" things - but the language of this book is so lovely, I'm getting sucked in anyway. I bet it's even prettier in the original French. ...Anyway, I started it today, so I don't really have much to say so far, beyond that.

Reading next: Probably Drum Songs: Glimpses of Dene History by Kerry Abel. This one seems to be a straight-up history of the Dene people in northern Canada. It'll probably be a bit dry in places, but I find the subject interesting enough, so I'm looking forward to it. :D Not sure how useful it'll be for that story that I want to write, but... that's fine. I doubt I'll feel like I'm wasting my time.
