What the hell did I just watch

So. It's been a while since the horror movie gang managed to get together, but we did have a stream tonight, and I'm so glad. Originally, my plans had been to grab a film from the library and watch it with glorious company consisting of Me, Myself, and I, but since that plan fell through due to weather, it's awesome that I had an alternate option.

Anyway! Tonight we watched Kuime, also known as Over Your Dead Body [IMDB]. General premise is: some people are involved in a play; as the play progresses, emotions onstage bleed through into real life, and the line between fiction and reality becomes blurred. Basically. And... uh.

Er.

Guys, this is one of the weirdest films I've ever seen.

Half the time, nobody could even figure out what was going on. Seriously, the stream chat was basically an endless stream of "What. What. Whaaaaat the hell." It wasn't even creepy-weird, a lot of the time. It was just WEIRD. Nothing made sense, and it was difficult to figure out what was going on. "WTF" is the order of the day, here.

I guess it didn't help that I had trouble keeping track of the characters. Because of course, they had their real-life identities, and their stage identities, and things became kind of a mishmash once the story started getting blurred. Which was partly the point, but it still made things hard to follow.

And I ask you: what the hell kind of name is Lemon?

Additionally, man, this film sure does love its gross squishy sound effects. And some... gross... imagery. Eugh.

Though the visuals were really interesting, I'll grant that. Like, it was a very nicely-filmed movie in general. But that's not enough to save it.

Errr essentially, the only thing that made this film even watchable for me was the fact that I was watching it with a bunch of jaded horror fans who snarked it the entire time and who were just as confused as I was. It's entirely possible that we just were outside the intended audience - I get the feeling it was meant to be, er, not an art film exactly (so, not like Bergman's Persona or anything, which is another hella weird film) but definitely an artsy horror movie.

Then again, I like artsy horror movies! But this... uh. Hm. Must say, I'm not a fan when I can't figure out what the hell is going on.

0/10, would not recommend. ;p Though if you're curious enough to try, be my guest....

[edit] Ohhhh apparently it's based on a ghost story... Well then. I guess "we were not the intended audience" is very true. Very likely that a Japanese audience would have got the reference. HOWEVER, it's still a bloody weird film, says I. The parts in the film that were based on the play (the play-within-the-film) were a lot more coherent than... whatever the hell was going on with the "reality" parts of the movie.
