A sundry rec post: Fic and Music

Dec 26, 2015 17:51

Sooo I'm going to roll in and rec two things that have nothing to do with each other. :D

First: My Yuletide Exchange gift! I'm still reading through the collection, and haven't put together my general rec post yet, but I'll rec my gift separately (and probably again later actually) because it's just that awesome.

This is the Ex Machina fic that I did not realize needed to exist until it existed. :D Unfortunately, some details might not make sense if you have not seen the film, but I highly encourage everyone who likes artificial intelligence and unusual formats to read it, because it's AMAZING.

Object Oriented (1243 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Ex Machina (2015)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Kyoko (Ex Machina), Ava (Ex Machina)
Summary:
As Nathan is dead, he will not require lunch.

Now, the details up there don't necessarily give much away, so I'll talk about it a little bit more about it: the story incorporates the research facility itself into the story as its own character, which I thought was bloody brilliant. And that is where the format I talked about comes in. While the story itself is mostly in prose, the Facility's parts are written in coding! Like so:

Kyoko.State.Query = Unresponsive
Kyoko.State.UnresponsiveLog = {Outside 0.99 PowerProblem 0.01}
Kyoko.Location = Hall A
Facility.Action = DeployContructors
Constructors.State = disabled until Nathan.AllClear

Wait
Wait

Loop Detected; Local Minimum Detected; LeastProhibitedAction = Activate Constructors, Directive = Evaluate, repair Kyoko

And in addition to all that coolness, the author developed a really awesome voice for Kyoko, and explored her relations with the Facility - and Ava too - and it's just. So. Good. Goooo reeeeeaaaad iiiiiiit, you will not regret doing so.

Second rec: Music! It's been a while since I've done a music rec. Today it's Kleztory, a Klezmer band based out of Montreal.

I had the pleasure of seeing them play live one year - I think it was around 2006, maybe? I was still in Wolfville at the time - and they were amazing. I fell totally in love with their music that night, bought the CDs, everything. They're so good! I only found out just today that they released a new album last year, after not putting anything out for a good while.

I couldn't find any studio recordings up on Youtube, but the band's channel has a lot of recordings of live performances, so I suggest giving it a look. I'll just post my favourite - "Vi bist du gevezn far prohibition", which is from the album titled Klezmer. Though the stuff from their Nomade album is great too.

Their new album is titled Arrival, and I haven't listened to much of it yet, but so far I really, really like it. There is one repeat - "Fun Tashlikh" is on both Arrival and Klezmer - but it isn't entirely a repeat because the Arrival version is a shorter/condensed version of the song. So far "Hora & Geamparale" is my favourite from Arrival, but as I haven't listened to the whole thing yet, we'll have to see...!
