Chapter Thirteen: Twelve Years of Loneliness

“Hello, Padfoot!”
Sirius turned around to look at the one who had just stepped into the kitchen.
“Hi, Moony,” he greeted back, beaming.
“What are you doing?” Remus came to the table Sirius was sitting at.
“Reading the interview with Harry in The Quibbler.”
“Again?” Remus took a seat next to Sirius.
“This is excellent! And he did it right under that old hag’s nose! I’m so proud of him,” said Sirius, apparently very satisfied.
Remus laughed. “I can see.” Then he gave Sirius a mysterious smile. “What about me?”
Sirius looked at him, confused. “What about you?”
“Are you also proud of me? At least a little bit?” asked Remus, still smiling.
Sirius smiled back. “No, because you’re doing things I don’t agree with.”
“Does it mean I need your agreement, then?”
Sirius just grinned.
“What if I tell you I won’t be able to spy on Greyback’s pack much longer?” asked Remus, and the smile didn’t fade away from his face.
“What’s the matter?” Sirius frowned slightly.
“Well...” Remus ran his fingers through the hair. “He doesn’t trust me. He suspects me too much, so it’s started being quite dangerous.”
“Stupid, it’s always been dangerous,” Sirius snorted.
It was Remus’s turn to grin.
“Does it mean you aren’t going back, then?” asked Sirius when Remus said nothing.
“Seems so.”
“Excellent!” said Sirius with a broad smile. “Not for the Order, of course,” he added apologetically.
“Not for the Order,” repeated Remus with pretended seriousness.
“You’re making fun of me again!” Sirius scolded him, but his very being was shining with delight.
“Am I?” Remus gave him a roguish smile.
“Yes, you are. Or,” Sirius fixed his eyes on his friend, “you just want to hear how I like having you here by my side,” he shifted forwards in his chair, “touching your skin,” he gently stroked Remus’s cheek and made him raise his head, “and kiss your tasty lips?” Their mouths met in a deep, sweet kiss.
For that short moment they were able to forget everything what was troubling their hearts, absolutely happy they could be together like this. They had shared a few more kisses before their mouths finally parted, both breathing quickly with excitement.
“Want some tea?” Sirius broke the silence.
“Sure.” Remus smiled at him happily.
It didn’t take long and they were sipping the steaming beverage from the cups Mrs Weasley had left behind when she left with the rest of her family.
“Do you know what my greatest wish is?” said Sirius, watching Remus drinking his tea. “To live happily with you as we once used to in our house and to spend so the rest of my life.”
Remus put his cup on the table. “You make me feel embarrassed sometimes. After all, we made a promise, didn’t we?”
Sirius sighed. “It’s early to talk about future. We don’t know what might happen the next day, do we?” he said and a slight, shy smile appeared on his face. Remus realized his words had meaning deeper than Sirius was willing to admit.
“Sirius, I like being with you,” said Remus suddenly.
Sirius blushed. “I’m happy to hear that,” he said quietly.
They smiled at each other with sweet comprehension.

Sirius lay down on Remus lying on a couch in the drawing room. He rested his head on Remus’s chest and Remus gently stroked his long black hair. None of them spoke; just a soft sound of crackling fire in a fireplace was heard.
Remus gave Sirius a small kiss on the head and locked him in his embrace. Sirius sighed quietly, listening to Remus’s calm heart beating.
“Moony?” Sirius spoke at last.
“Hmm?”
“I’d like to ask you something, but to be honest I’m afraid to hear the answer. Maybe you are not prepared to tell me yet...”
“What is it, Padfoot?” Remus interrupted him in a kind voice.
“Well… You know... I’d like to know what you were doing after I was imprisoned. Stuff like what your life was like after that and so...” said Sirius in a tone little embarrassed.
“Sad and lonely,” answered Remus calmly.
“And... did you... did you find someone...?”
“Someone with whom I was going out?”
“Yes,” said Sirius silently. “After all, twelve years is a long time...”
“Right, it’s a very long time...”
“So?” Sirius raised his head and looked into Remus’s face lit by the firelight.
Remus was staring at him for a while, reading Sirius’s true question in his glistening eyes.
“At first, you want to know whether I was still meeting Rea, am I right?”
“And were you?” asked Sirius curiously.
Remus smiled. “You’re able to be jealous even after all those years?”
Sirius laid his head back on Remus’s chest in order to avoid his eye.
“I’ve never really understood what the relationship between you two was,” he said half-accusingly.
Remus stroked his hair again.
“Do you remember the kiss she gave me?” he asked.
“I can’t forget,” snarled Sirius.
“That time I told her I was with someone. She guessed it was you and she threatened me with your death.”
Sirius stayed silent.
“In the end, she understood it wasn’t the best way to get me,” added Remus and removed the black fringe from Sirius’s eyes.
“That’s not everything, is it?” asked Sirius.
“No, it isn’t. After you ended up in Azkaban, I was very mad at you at first.”
Sirius sighed sadly. “You had a good reason.”
Remus ignored this remark and continued. “I wanted to do something what would surely have hurt you if you had known...”
Sirius raised his head again and looked deep into Remus’s sincere eyes full of pain.
“You slept with her,” he said quietly without any hint of reproach in his voice.
“It was really stupid of me,” said Remus, enduring Sirius’s look.
“Did it help?”
“No, I felt even worse.”
Sirius gave him a faint smile. He pulled a little higher to give Remus a tender kiss.
“You’re such an idiot.” He chuckled. “She wasn’t the only one, was she?” he asked with a grin.
Remus shook his head. “Do you remember Anabelle Winter?”
“That cutie from Hufflepuff? She was one year above us, wasn’t she? Wormtail had a crush on her.”
“Yes, exactly that one.”
“Just don’t tell me you picked her up.” Sirius stared at Remus suspiciously.
Remus gave him a confident smile.
“And? What was it like with her?” asked Sirius curiously.
Remus shrugged indifferently. “Not bad. She was a widow with a four-year-old son. Her husband was killed shortly after their wedding.”
Sirius frowned. “Death Eaters, I suppose.”
“Positive.”
“How long were you two together?” Sirius continued asking.
“Two years, maybe a little longer.”
“What happened?”
“She moved away.”
“Who was next?”
“How do you know there was a next?” asked Remus, amused.
“Just guessing.”
“Daisy Middleton.”
“What?” Sirius cried, surprised. “You were going out with your ex from Hogwarts?”
“And what?” replied Remus. “We were getting along very well.”
“She was bossing you around all the time at school. That’s why you left her.”
“She changed,” said Remus calmly.
“So why did you split up with her again?”
Remus shrugged with a sad smile. “I couldn’t give her what she wanted. But we stayed friends.”
Sirius was watching Remus’s face silently. Then he shook his head and sighed.
“How many women did you have during those twelve years actually?” he asked in the end.
“Just those three if I count Rea too.”
Sirius raised his eyebrow. “Really? What about guys?”
“What would I have done with a guy?” asked Remus, offended.
“Don’t tell me I’ve been the only one in your life,” said Sirius with a grin, but Remus stayed serious.
Now Sirius was staring at him, perplexed. “Have I?” he asked, embarrassed.
Remus, wordless, stroked his hair again, nervously playing with a strand that stayed among his fingers, avoiding Sirius’s eye.
“You know,” started Sirius, “it was quite surprising to find out you might’ve been interested in me. You were going out only with girls.”
Remus didn’t reply.
“It was tempting,” Sirius continued. “I longed for someone who could like me even that way. And I was curious whether you would give me a chance. You didn’t disappoint me.” He smiled at Remus, who was still avoiding his look.
“There were crowds of girls who wanted to go out with you. Even some guys...” said Remus quietly.
“You know I wasn’t interested in girls. And I knew nothing about guys.”
“Because you had eyes only for James.” Remus finally looked at Sirius.
“That’s right,” said Sirius cheerfully.
“So why did you focus on me?”
“I told you. I was curious.”
Remus snorted.
Sirius grinned. “So who’s jealous now?”
“I’m not jealous!” retorted Remus.
Sirius chuckled. “Of course.” He stroked Remus’s cheek and kissed him fondly.
“Hey, Sirius,” started Remus hesitantly after the sweet moment. “Maybe it isn’t a very appropriate question, but I’d like to know about you...”
“About me?”
“About your twelve years.”
“Hmm, let me see...” Sirius made a thoughtful face. “No Dementor wanted to go on a date with me,” he said in the end.
“You’ve got a really twisted sense of humour,” said Remus, frowning.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to annoy you,” said Sirius, now serious. “The truth is that Azkaban is such a horrible place that even speaking of it gives you goose bumps.”
“I’m sorry, it was a stupid question,” Remus apologized.
“No, not at all.” Sirius smiled. “I’m glad you want to know. Your interest means very much to me.”
He felt how Remus’s heartbeat quickened, but his friend stayed silent. Sirius didn’t need his reply. The very reaction of the body underneath was enough for him.
“I had plenty of time to think about my stupidity that cost Harry’s parents their lives,” he said gloomily.
“We both were stupid,” said Remus, trying to catch Sirius’s eye. “But you know, my dear silly Padfoot, if there wasn’t a traitor among us, Lily and James would be still here. You couldn’t know Wormtail was Voldemort’s spy. None of us knew.”
“But still...”
“Be quiet! I want to spend a nice evening with you,” Remus interrupted him firmly. He buried his fingers into Sirius’s black mane, giving him a passionate kiss.
