how the other half lives

We just got a new roommate. The last one was a friend of mine who I really, truly thought was a responsible, driven person. He certainly does seem to present himself that way. Looks are very often deceiving, though. He got a really great job that he was thrilled to have, then only a few weeks in, got fired because he forgot to attend a scheduled meeting on his day off. After that, he made no apparent effort to find another job. Instead, he put lots of money and effort into setting up some sort of elaborate pot-growing operation (not in my house, thankfully). So finally I had to ask him to leave so that our friendship could remain intact. It'll definitely be a while before I can hang out with him without it being awkward, though.

The new roomie is a straight guy named Jason, who just moved here from New Mexico. He has a year's worth of savings to draw from, and is looking for a job in computer graphics (he's a Mac guy). So far he's been really easy to be around. We're hoping for the best with this one!

The major complication from the last roommate is that I've gotten behind on my mortgage payments, and now they're ridiculously high. I'm pretty stressed out about it. I still can't quite afford to pay all of it, even after making all of that money in the garage sale two weekends ago. I guess I'll have to get to work selling more guitars and such. And then I'll have to get a second job. I really didn't want to have to do that, but it's starting to look unavoidable.

Anyway, all this has got me thinking about how I can avoid having these money woes in the long-term, and it seems like getting a double-degree might be the right thing to do. I certainly don't want to give up studying music, but I also need something that will pay the bills. I don't doubt that I'd be an excellent voice teacher and performer, but it would be good to have a backup career as well. A psychology degree would be pretty useful, as I'd like to go into counseling.

Scott (my best friend) will be in town on Friday, and Sydnie will be in town shortly after that. I'm really looking forward to spending time with close friends. Since Shane has been here, I've been able to make so many more friends, much more quickly, but I don't have many people around with whom I share a long history of friendship. That's really important to me.
