Two weeks ago I legally witnessed the holy matrimony of two very good friends. And wept.
Caught up a bit with seldom seen friends at the reception.
The I traveled by car to St. Catherines, ON to visit this lovely friend of mine and meet her family.
We went to work in style. I learned lots of new things about horticulture and about having sore inflexible legs.
I had some hairs hacked off and we went rollerblading. And clubbing (not pictured). Never thought I would love it nearly as much as I did, but we all knew I liked to dance, I suppose.
We tried to see the Walkmen in concert in Toronto but by the time we got the show was all sold out. Still a concertless summer...
This week, back in Chicago my favorite aunt came around and I cooked up a colorful storm. Beet bisque (I looked at borsht recipes but ended winging this one).
These got stuffed with a tomato, corn and black bean stuffing.
And then we camped in the back yard. "Laura, I know why you are starting to hate the suburbs. They have no soul," Said Aunt Mary Jo while we chatted into the night. I don't think I am as comfortable with any other human being as far from my own age as her. She's 40 years older than me but we might as well be sisters.
In other news, I have been reading "The First Days of School"--a book recommended my many professors to education students for the summer before starting your first job. I have to admit, as the time gets closer I am feeling less and less confident about moving across the country away(and significantly farther away) from everyone I know and love to teach kids in a culture significantly different than the ones I am used to. But I'm pretty sure this is God's doing, so I'm sure it will be fine.
This past Wednesday I was the guest speaker to about 40 kids at the church youth group I grew up going to. I read Proverbs 1:20 to the end of the chapter and talked about wisdom: it's not anything to be convicted or know what is good or right if you don't act on it accordingly. I got to use lost of stories and examples of my own moral failure. Very fun stuff... I feel like it went well, as the discussion groups went long after I finished the talk. The kids surprised me with some really awesome donations for my classroom in Albuquerque. Stuff like that is always such a blessing and so humbling.
Tomorrow after church Julia and I are headed up to the woods of Washington Island in Door County, WI to camp three nights. Bought lots of film. Will bring books. Should be relaxing. And when I get back it will be less than a day before Neal is back in the states. And then lots more traveling... (Hooray!) Summer sure is flying...
