* two more books finished this month... "
Jarhead" by Anthony Swofford and "
Grendel" by John Gardner.
"Jarhead" was pretty good... one Marine's point of view of Desert Storm. I saw the movie first and was intrigued, so I borrowed the book from the library. The movie was good, but obviously a very Hollywood-ized version of the book.
"Grendel" I read only because I'd just seen the opera... the book kept putting me to sleep, way too much philosophizing in it. I'll stick to Beowulf, thanks.
I'm nearly done with my 11th book of the year (i think it's #11, gotta recount)... i borrowed it from Mel on Saturday, started it Sunday night, and have had my nose glued to it each night since. I'm almost done & I'm loving it... can't wait to tell you about it in a couple days. :)
* I got a check in the mail from a friend in Chicago for the
Guts & Glory walk yesterday... Thanks, Jim!! I've officially met my fundraising goal for the year! YAY!!! And with two weeks left to go, don't think you're all off the hook just yet. I'll continue my pesky fundraising efforts to see just how much i CAN raise this year, and give myself something to reach for next year. (I'm a little concerned that I might not be able to actually walk this year... my f**king guts are acting up again. But bitching about it is for another entry.)
* Two new restaurants tried recently... one noteworthy, one barely worth an entry (only to remind myself to avoid it).
Marouch (4905 Santa Monica Blvd, LA) -- my ex had raved about this restaurant several times in the course of our relationship, so one night last week when i was craving lebanese food, Marouch popped into my head. oh. my. god. BEST babaganoush EVER... the hummus was great (I'm partial to Roro's though)... the lamb kebabs Chris & I shared were amazing... even the falafel was excellent (light & fluffy, so unlike what you usually get when you order falafel). we split two plates and it was more than enough food for the two of us and we waddled out of there fat & happy. on the list of "regulars" it goes!
La Parrilla (3129 W Sunset Blvd) -- i love mexican food and was craving it hard-core the night we walked into this place. i'll be skipping it from now on. from the inconvenient parking to the less than attentive waitstaff and blah-tasting food, i was less than impressed.
