foodie sunday

The Bun woke up earlier than usual this morning so J and I decided to head out for breakfast with him. J heard about the kaya toast at Tong Ah Eating House from one of his colleagues, so there we went. The Bun has been on a kaya toast kick recently. I don't know where he puts it, but the child can somehow inhale up to two slices on his own (depending on the cafe, this could mean two whole slices of bread) after eating a full meal. Anyway, I love me some toast and tea, so I don't have a problem feeding his latest food obsession, ha ha.

Eager eaters of toast.
It can be a bit of a wait because the owner only starts toasting it after you place your order along with the rest of the Sunday crowd. Our toast finally arrived stacked high up on a plate, and as you can see from the photo, a little hand couldn't quite wait for the picture to be taken before helping himself.

My mother began making pineapple tarts for Chinese New Year today. For once this year I have been exempted from assisting my mother with the rest of her annual bake-athon because everyone felt that it would be too difficult to get any serious baking done with The Bun around. But pineapple tarts are actually very quick to do if you have everything in place (i.e. pineapple jam has been cooked, the dough has been mixed and chilled, etc) so it was possible for me to help her today.

The Bun spent about twenty minutes watching and firing a barrage of questions about the baking process before he got bored and went off to watch nature documentaries with J, so he wasn't as much of a menace as we thought.

As much as my sister and I groan every year about having to help out, we do recognise that it is very much a family tradition. I started properly assisting my mother when I was about eight years old and have only missed a couple of years since then. We all joke that soon The Bun will be inducted into the family bakery; right now his real 'contribution' involves er, eating as many cookies as he is allowed.

I can't believe Chinese New Year is next weekend. I can already feel the accompanying migraine coming on.
