nightwalking

J returned home from London yesterday afternoon and in a bid to combat jet lag we immediately headed out right after he got in, dumped his bags, and had a shower. The peak hour traffic was a killer and after dinner in a crowded hawker centre the urge to just go somewhere far AWAY from everyone and their beeping, honking car was too strong, and so we headed to Labrador Park.

I cannot believe it has never occurred to me before to go to the parks at night. Why should I brave the blazing heat when there is so much peace and quiet and stillness at night? Just the week before we were at the same park in the late morning. It was pleasant enough because it was a cloudy day and it wasn't all that crowded, but now, having been there at night, I don't think I even want to go there anymore during the day.

The best bit for a night walk, I think, is the newly-opened Bukit Chermin boardwalk. It hugs the southern coast and looks out into Keppel Bay. On one side is the sea, with the lights of Jurong Island twinkling in the distance; on the other, the foothills of Bukit Chermin. The Bun had a good time running along the elevated boardwalk, looking at the waves quietly rolling in. The tide was very low when we were there, revealing curvy patterned sandbanks and rocks all jumbled together.

I like that the lighting was deliberately kept dim and subtle, supposedly, according to the National Parks Board, so that the nocturnal creatures could go on with their natural activities. With the sea breeze blowing, and the lack of crowds (and sun!), I really enjoyed this walk.

We got as far as the Reflections at Keppel Bay development. Now that's a reason to buy me a Big Sweep ticket soon - one can only dream, I guess. To look out through full-height glass windows into a deep, dark, silent bay. Yes, yes, yes.

Little running imp.
I remember wandering around Keppel Marina a couple of years ago, also at night, and also exhilarated with the darkness and quiet of the place. (No idea if it's still quiet now!) My friends and I even had a picnic there once, when I was still pregnant with The Bun. Last night, with The Bun in tow, we didn't manage to walk all the way to the bridge and to the Marina, but now that I'm happily reacquainted with Keppel Bay at night, we'll probably be back again soon.
