OK, gmail is great and all. It has gobs of space, I can use IMAP and POP3 for free and it's never NOT available. But there's one significant rub I have with this thing.
When I use IMAP, I can't really move messages from gmail to local folders. A "hidden" copy of all my mail (which isn't spam, that is; spam goes to "[Gmail]/Spam" and can just rot there) is stored in the IMAP folder "[Gmail]/All Mail", which corresponds to "All Mail" in the web version of gmail. It's emptying this extra stuff that I don't want to remain on the server that's got me confused.
I used to be able to do it in a roundabout way: select all from the All Mail folder, move it to "[Gmail]/Trash", and then select all in that Trash folder and move it to the real Trash folder. Then Empty Trash. But it doesn't work anymore. It appears to work, but right after I empty trash and compact, the bastard messages are back in "[Gmail]/All Mail".
I don't want to have to go to the web version every time I want to move a message. There's got to be a better way. Can anyone clue me in on this? Am I doing it wrong?
(if it matters any, I'm using Thunderbird for the IMAP client)
