High time for a round of creditor cuts

May 29, 2008 17:08

OK, since I have several cards I don't use and have kept for ages, I'd like to clean house and keep the two cards I DO use. Hell, I have two cards EACH from two banks due to mergers and acquisitions.

The reason I've kept the old cards: I don't want to have to deal with IVR hell, guilt-tripping and general "we want you to stay" crap. And also, I've heard that my credit score could go down if I cancel the one card I've had since 1993 (first credit card ever, and still has a lousy 19% APR. It's dusty. :o)

Thus the question, dear web readers: What is a good way, which doesn't involve me being a total asshole, to quickly cancel these cards and have it done the first time? I'm also interested in keeping my good credit actually -good-, so hopefully canceling the cards won't mess that up.

I know that I could just call, but I'd probably be held up in purgatory forever and a day. I don't want that.

dear the web
