Homework Hiromu/Yoko
Back when he was in Middle School, he was a second year with not much friends. He preferred to be alone. He preferred to just study about scientific stuff, and focus on his dream of following after his parents' footsteps. But there was a person he could not ignore. Someone he promised to protect and cherish for the rest of his life.
"Hiromu!" And there she is. Usami Yoko. A kohai he knew since he was very young. "Hi-ro-mu!" She stopped in front of him, crossing her arms in front of her chest. "You're helping me with homework, remember?" She looked strict, probably too strict for someone so young.
He almost smiled at her expression. "I was just about to go there." He stood up and patted the dirt off his pants. "Let's go to the library?"
She smiled brightly and nodded. "Un!"
The next day, an angry Usada-sensei ambushed him in front of the school. "Sakurada-kun!"
He blinked in surprise. Usada sensei wasn't his teacher in any subject and he only knew the teacher because Usada was Yoko's homeroom teacher. "Uh, what is it, sensei?"
Usada frowned as if Hiromu's answer was wrong. "You did Yoko's homework again, didn't you?" As proof, he took out a paper with Hiromu's handwriting on it.
"I just helped her a bit." Hiromu shrugged.
"Helped?" Usada looked like his eyes would bulge out of its sockets because of anger. "Everything is in your handwriting! Not even one is written by miss Usami!"
Hiromu sighed, scratching the back of his neck. "I'll tell her not to be lazy anymore. I'm sorry." He bowed deeply.
Usada sighed as well, knowing that Hiromu was as much a victim as he was an accomplice. "Just tell her to study properly, okay?"
The student chuckled. "I'll teach her properly."
Hiromu leaned on the wall beside the first years' classroom, waiting for Yoko to come out. A few students whispered things to each other as they passed by him. Minutes later, two girls pushed Yoko to the door, smiling mischievously. "Take care of our Yoko, Sakurada-senpai."
He simply smiled at them, the professional type he always use on people he barely knew. "Let's go?" he asked.
Yoko nodded, seemingly embarrassed by her friend's actions.
They walked to the library side by side. He then looked at her, saying "Did Usada-sensei talk to you?"
She pouted, looking at the floor. "He did." She crossed her arms. "He's such a nagger."
"I told you to do it on your own." Hiromu scolded. "Why did you pass what I solved?"
She looked at him with pitiful eyes. "But..."
"No buts!" He interjected with a strict tone. "I'm teaching you so you won't get scolded. You understand that, right?"
"Yes..." She hung her head down.
He laughed a bit and placed a hand on top of her head. "Just do your best, kohai."
She looked up with a light blush on her face. "Yes!"
Admirer Hiromu/Yoko
He was about to graduate then, when he heard it from Yoko's classmate. Since Hiromu was about to go to the High School level, numerous boys got their courage to confess their feelings to the young girl.
"It's not like I've been guarding her, right?" He asked incredulously. "Why are they so afraid of me?
"Oh I don't know" Nick, one of his classmates and a childhood friend as well, said while shrugging. "You do seem pretty close. And you tutor her, make her homework and all. Besides, you did promise to protect her."
"I did but that's not-" Hiromu was frowning as well.
Nick raised an eyebrow, eyes showing how tired he was of these type of conversations. "What you think and what you do are sometimes very different, Hiromu. Do you realize how protective you are of Yoko?"
"I am protective of her but I'm not her boyfriend. I don't want to stop her from having one either." He explained patiently.
"You really think so?" Nick looked like he couldn't disagree more.
"We-well," Despite his mind telling him how sure he was, he stuttered. He really could not imagine her having another guy beside her other than him. He assumed he'll have to protect her all his life. He can't imagine a family of his own either, anyway. When he thinks of the future, all he sees is an older Hiromu still taking care of Yoko. Was that a weird thought? "I want her to be happy." It was the only conclusion he could come up with. He did want her to be happy more than anything.
Nick chuckled, patting him on the back. "You've got a long way to go."
I've got a long way to go? Hiromu stared at the trees lining the back of their school. What kind of long way is he supposed to walk in anyway? What did he have to realize? He'd be in another school in just a few months and he would have to leave Yoko alone in this school. He had to realize things right now! Before it's too late.
"But what...?" He mutters, messing his hair with one hand in frustration. As he continued pondering about this, he heard footsteps nearing him. "Yoko! I was just-" He turned around and looked at the girl standing in front of him.
Which was not Yoko. It was a first year student who was in the same Science club. He remembered talking to her before when they were making an exhibit for the cultural festival.
"Oh I'm sorry..." The girl had long hair, some of which were covering her face. She looked really shy. "We-were you expecting Usami-san..."
He put on his polite business smile and shook his head. "What is it?"
"I- I'm... anou..." She looked down and fiddled with her fingers. "P-please... Could you give me your number please? I- I've always admired you and- I mean, ahmm..." She looked like she was about to cry for some reason.
Hiromu's eyes widened. Why is this girl asking him his contact detail? "I appreciate... your admiration..." He started, not quite getting the situation. "But I don't really give out my number..." He tilted his head a bit, wondering what else to say.
The girl's eyes widened and she looked up, fear and sadness mixing in her expression as she hurriedly said "I- I completely understand! I'm- I'm gonna go now. A-and j-just, congratulations on your graduation, senpai. I- we'll miss you in the club." She blinked one time before turning her back and walking away quickly. Before completely disappearing though, she looked at him and said "Good luck with Yoko-senpai." She sounded upset but trying to be strong. She then ra away as fast as she can.
At the corner of his eyes, Hiromu saw a yellow sleeve poking out from a tree a few meters away. "Yoko?" He walked to the tree and, as expected, there was the girl crouching behind a tree. "What are you doing there?"
"Nothing. S-studying the soil composition... or something." She looked away and patted the soil as if to prove her point.
He chuckled. "You would rather run around a one day marathon than study. We all know that." He smiled and crouched beside her. "Did you hear anything?"
She looked at him and pouted. "No. Did she confess to you?" Her eyes looked awfully serious.
He shrugged. "No. She asked for my number..." He sighed. "I don't understand why."
She sighed as well. "She was confessing in her own way, stupid Hiromu." She lightly punched him on the shoulder.
He looked at her with a frown. "Why didn't she just say so then? How am I supposed to know that?" As usual, he sounded offended by her opinion.
She giggled. "That's just like you." She looked up at him with a smile. "I'm glad you're like this. I can't imagine you having a girl friend. Or falling in love. Or... having any type of romantic relationship..." She looked down and sighed.
"I can't either. Me having a relationship, or Yoko having a boyfriend." He laughed. "Whenever I think about people I would be with in the future, all I could imagine is fighting all the time with you."
She blinked. Once. Twice. Then stared at him wide-eyed. "What?!" She felt her cheeks burning hot. "F-future? With me?"
He stared back with a clueless expression. "Hm?"
She frowned, realizing how much he didn't understand what it meant. "Oh forget it." She pouted. "Stupid Hiromu."
"What did I do?" He furrowed his eyebrows. "At least tell me what I said wrong."
She stood up and crossed her arms. "No. You're just really stupid."
"Says the girl who can't answer her homework." Hiromu pouted as well and stood up, turning her back on him. "Good luck next year when I'm gone."
"I- I can do things on my own!" Yoko stubbornly replied, eyes wide with defiance.
"If you say so." Hiromu didn't sound convinced.
"I can! I surely can!"
And just like that, they both realized how important each other was. But not quite know enough to realize just how much they liked each other. Well that's another story for another time.
Accident
It was just a few weeks since he started riding the motorcycle. Haruto recently got his student's license and was given special permission to use it to come to school. He liked riding his motorcycle, and it felt like he was free as he rode it.
But it all changed one day. He was speeding through a road, and caught sight of an underclassman walking through the pedestrian lane. He took a sharp right smoothly but then an overspeeding truck passed by so he had to swerve away. Through all the confusion, he hit the underclassmen and both of them got thrown to the sidewalk roughly.
Haruto woke up with numerous injuries and a small trauma. He immediately searched for the girl he hit, and found her alone in the opposite room. She acquired amnesia, and the doctors only knew her name from the school.
"Koyomi-chan?" He knocked on the door and waited for a reply. After a minute, a quiet "enter" could be heard from inside. He felt a strange pang inside his heart as he opened the door. This Koyomi looked small and fragile, like a lifeless doll. Her eyes were empty. Her expression was vacant. "How are you doing?"
She frowned. "Am I supposed to know you, mister?" She sounded polite, but as equally annoyed.
He shook his head and sat on the chair beside her bed. "I'm just someone from school. I..." He bowed his head. "I was the one who was riding the motorcycle that-"
"So?" She cut him off harshly. "Does knowing that help me or anything?" She looked furious, eyes showing deep sadness. "I don't even remember what school I was in, or what kind of food I like. I'm empty. I don't know anything. Even if you tell me that, nothing will happen."
"Even so," He looked her in the eye. "Even so, I want to say sorry. And even if it won't come back right now, I want to help you step by step along the way." He sounded serious, sincere and honest. He was willing to do anything to make it up to her. "If you would let me, I'll help."
"Why?" She was still frowning, but the anger was toning down. "I don't need your pity!"
He took her left hand and held it with both hands. "Let me help you. I'll accept all your anger, all your fears, everything. Let me hold those and help you regain all your happy memories."
Her eyes softened. "I don't understand why you need to do this. It was an accident."
He smiled. "We haven't met in school yet but... I can't bear to see those empty eyes." He tightened his grip on her hand. "From now on, I want to know more. Will you let me help?"
"Do what you want..." Tears fell from her eyes. She looked away and lied back down the bed, hiding behind the blanket. "Close the door when you leave."
"Un..." He smiled.
Since then, he hasn't rode a motorcycle. He used his bicycle to fetch her from her house and to go home with her.
Since then, he also learned a lot about her. She was living with his uncle, Wajima-sensei of the High School department. She did not have parents, the same way he was. She was anemic, and was always sick. As he found out more, he grew more and more protective of her. He wanted her to smile more, to have more friends, to be able to make more memories.
"Thank you, Sohma-kun." Wajima said as he placed their breakfast on the table. As usual, Haruto arrived early and sat in the living room to wait for the delicious breakfast Wajima would make. "Without Sohma-kun, I'm sure Koyomi-chan won't be this happy."
He blinked. "Eh? Me?"
Wajima laughed. "Before the accident, she's always been alone. You could say she just went on with life without making any human connection. She was smart and didn't ask for help, so everyone left her alone."
Haruto smiled. "I'm glad I met her." He laughed as he took some toast from his plate. "I changed for the better too, they said. It must have been fate that Koyomi-chan and I met, then."
"Must have been." Wajima nodded.
"You're spouting nonsense so early in the morning, Haruto." Koyomi, already wearing her uniform for school, walked to her usual seat and pulled her plate near. Despite her tone, she had a small smile on her face.
Haruto laughed and looked at her with a large smile. "Nonsense? It's nothing like that!"
"This part of Koyomi would probably never change." Wajima shrugged.
"It's not cute at all, right?" Haruto grinned mischievously.
Pouting, Koyomi noisily put down her fork and said "Sorry for not being cute."
Haruto laughed some more. "I was joking, just joking!" He reached over to her side and patted her head. "Koyomi-chan is really cute."
"I don't need to hear that." Koyomi said, still pouting.
"Hai, hai~"
