Racefail '09
So I've been following rydra_wong's links for the past few weeks, reading and reading and getting angry and upset and feeling impotent and wanting to join in but not knowing what to say. Well I've just read kita0610's post and I've got to say "I'm not ok with this". I'm not ok with POC being marginalized, held back, ignored or patronized, either as writers/editors etc or in fandom.* I'm not ok with White writers/editors etc using their privilege to shut people out and shut people up. I'm not ok with a refusal to apologize or even to acknowledge that they were in the wrong. I'm not ok with a refusal to engage and learn. I'm going to quote directly from kita0610 now as I've run out of words
I am not okay with this.
It is not about 'both sides behaving badly'.
It is about racism. Full stop.
Everything else is window dressing.
Racism will not be tolerated in any community I am a part of.
Maybe "I'm not ok with this" can become a meme, a way for people to speak out who haven't felt they can before.
*Or any where else.
