Krystal scowled, stretched out on the sofa, as laughter wiggled into her ears.
No, not a bad thing at all. Her older sister landing that little ball of sunshine as a girlfriend definitely was something decent. Okay, great, even.
More laughter and muffled conversations sounded in the background and Krystal’s frown deepened with it. She had been the one who fanned the fire and a small part of her was regretting it. That smart part was growing every single day, gradually eating into the ‘I’m so happy for you’ side.
“You need to date,” Krystal had teased her older sister about a month back, “Anyone would do. Or you’ll evolve into an old spinster.”
Older sister Jessica was extremely shy, passive and private. Despite being in her early twenties and in college, she had no close friend to speak of. To Krystal, that episode was a joke, nothing more. She hadn’t foresee this situation. Fast forward two weeks from that time, shy Jessica brought in bouncy Sunny and introduced her to Krystal as the girlfriend.
Krystal felt happy for Jessica, at that time, days onwards. It was something to be happy about. Her older sister finally got a companion and this Sunny appeared to be someone who’d complement Jessica’s character.
“Hey, Krystal!”
Sunny popped out, a grinning Jessica attached to her back.
Yeah, Krystal was happy for her sister until she realised how every single damn thing begun to revolve around Sunny.
Like now.
Krystal couldn’t keep up the smiley younger sibling act anymore.
“Yeah?”
“Wanna have dinner with us?”
“No. I don’t want to puke during dinner.”
The couple raised their eyebrows in unison, similar confusion on their faces. Krystal badly wanted to throw the cushion at them and ask them to get the fuck out of her face.
“Soojung, are you not feeling well?”
“Yeah, PDA overdose. Get your dinner, suck each other’s faces, whatever. Leave me alone,” Krystal responded with a cold tone and got up from the sofa, almost desperate to escape after saying those words. She didn’t mean it that way, but too late to take them back.
“Jung Soojung! Stop right there!”
And now, Krystal sighed, Jessica’s angry, genius.
“Apologise. Now.”
“For what?” Krystal shrugged, choosing to rebel the entire way, “It’s the truth right? Sunny this, Sunny that, Sunny Sunny Sunny. Every single fucking day. Gross.”
Jessica glared and Krystal met those eyes for a second before turning away. It wasn’t a retreat but Jessica’s eyes had a tinge of tears. Guilt was approaching.
“I’ll leave you guys to talk okay? I’ll be in your room.”
With her peripheral vision, Krystal saw Sunny give Jessica a quick hug.
She scoffed loudly before she knew it.
“You’re just asking for a fight now, Jung Soojung.”
“I’m stating facts, the obvious, all of that. Sure, you can fault me for that but I don’t even care, anymore.”
Jessica was angry and hurt. It wasn’t something Krystal wanted but failing to keep her emotions in check, everything had spilled forward.
Sunny had stolen her sister, her gossip mate, her movie night buddy, her best friend.
Jessica was still ranting, but she had blocked it all out. Krystal smiled bitterly, realising how ironic the situation was.
Teasing Jessica for keeping to herself, it finally struck Krystal that she was actually a replica. She didn’t have a single close friend, no love interest and only her sister. Jessica took on too many roles and now, at one go, all of it disappeared.
“Jung Soojung! Are you even listening to me!”
“Kinda,” Krystal didn’t want to stay in this space anymore, she had to adjust herself, her life even, “I’m sorry okay, take it as I’m on my period or something. Sorry.”
With that, Krystal walked back to her room, fighting tears.
Wiping her tears away, she locked herself in the room. A heavy sigh slipped from her lips and she threw herself on her bed. The voice in her head spoke words of comfort and she knew that one day, she’d move on from this and grow out of her reliance on Jessica.
