「Even though it’s winter, I want to have a BBQ date」 (by Aiba)
「I want to become a father soon ♥」 (by Matsumoto)
“The romance of men”
A showdown of imagination!!
The 5 members of Arashi make their appearances on PINKY!
Let’s ask for some consultation regarding love matters from them - the big brothers of PINKIES ♥… or so we thought, but the conversation soon became much more animated with the tales from their past!?
「I want to try this」 「I want to do that ♥」 etc.
While muttering their various wishes, the 5 of them gra~dually get excited and end up reporting all of their Arashi-style love stories!
Ohno Satoshi: “At a nabe party, if she makes me some zousui, I’ll definitely fall for her ♥”
10 years ago, I fell asleep on the concrete floor at the filming scene of a drama.
Having welcomed their 10th anniversary and so joined the rank of veterans, still, Arashi keeps advancing without any limit. This New Year features a gorgeous event: the 5 members’ special drama 「Saigo no Yakusoku」 (Fuji TV)!! Riida, please tell us the highlights of this drama.
Ohno: Err, errrrrr~ (his eyebrows knitted)
(T/N: LOL the original description inserted here is 眉毛への字, literally meaning “eyebrows in the shape of the “he” character”. This is the “he” character: へ <--- now you know the shape of Riida’s eyebrows when confronted with that question)
Jun: It’s hard to explain, right?
Ohno: Yeah.
Shou: There’re lots of things which can’t be put into words.
Nino: Because it’s a suspense drama.
Jun: Having to explain this, Riida is facing quite a high hurdle here I guess (laugh).
Aiba: Dangerous! Dangerous!
Shou: What I can say is that the theme is a 10-year bond.
What kind of suspense is it? What do you mean by the 10-year bond? If you go on to keep that a secret, we will all become way too anxious.
Nino: More than anything else, the sheer fact that all 5 of us get to appear in one drama together, I personally think just that is already amazing. The impact when all 5 of us assemble should be pretty big!
Shou: The 「V no Arashi」 that we first appeared in when we debuted is a proof for that, right?
Aiba: So it takes us 10 years to do another drama with all 5 members.
I’d like to give some explanation here! In 「V no Arashi」, the then just debuted Arashi members acted as the image characters of the 1999 Volleyball World Cup. It was a teen drama, portraying the story about a volleyball club!
Jun: Among the staffs of 「Wagaya no Rekishi」 (planned to be broadcast in Spring 2010, Fuji TV), there is one person who did 「V no Arashi」 with us. “At that time, everyone seemed to be really busy and so, during the break, fell asleep right on the concrete floor”, he said.
Ohno: We did sleep! It was a scene in which we were tired out after the volleyball practice, but we ended up sleeping for real.
Nino: In the scene when we had to go “hah, hah” too, it was no acting, we really went “hah, hah” because we were so tired!
Ohno: Because back then we had yet to acquire the lifestyle in which we can’t sleep no matter how sleepy we are.
Shou: Suddenly the 5 of us entered such a new world, and so all around us were things that we totally didn’t understand. There’s that feeling too, right?
Nino: It was quite a struggle, but it’s really fun to think that from 10 years ago, the 5 of us were already able to do a drama together.
Sakurai Shou: “Getting on the same lift at the ski resort and it’ll be just the two of us ♥, a situation that will make your heart beat fast for sure!”
With all the excitement from many memories, next, would you please turn to solving the various troubles that PINKY’s readers have? Arashi nii san ♥
I look forward to a romance at a ski resort.
Shou: Wait a minute! The readers of PINKY see us as their big brothers?
Because our readers are mainly around 20 years old.
Nino: I see, so we are the big brothers.
Jun: Can we really give them any advice~?
Ohno: It’s impossible.
Aiba: Totally no good, looks like they’ll say that about us.
For example, you could give them some recommendation about the date plan for this winter. How about that?
Shou: Ohno san, when it comes to recommendation about going fishing in the winter, as expected, it gotta be wakasagi, right? (laugh)
(T/N: wakasagi, or “lake smelt”, is a kind of small fish that lives in ice water. I came across this article about
wakasagi ice fishing, you can read it if you want more information)
Aiba: Open a hole in the ice and drop your line down (laugh).
(T/N: this is actually the right way to do it LOL even though, well, Aiba chan simplified things a lot)
Ohno: You shouldn’t take that lightly you know. You have to do it properly or there could be danger.
Jun: Is there anyone who has never done that before?
Nino: I haven’t. When everyone went fishing for the location shoot, I couldn’t go.
Jun: Because you’d get sick if you got on the boat (laugh).
Nino: I went for some imaginary wakasagi fishing all by myself. Well, talking about winter dates, after all it should be skiing, right?
Jun: I want to fall in love on a ski slope ♥.
Shou: Romansu no Kamisama~♪, isn’t it?
(T/N: Romansu no Kamisama - “The God of Romance” is a 1993 single by Japanese artist Hirose Koumi. It was a smash hit and 1.75 millions copies got sold. ‘kay, I figured you’d want to try listening,
here, and
the lyrics for your reference, but don’t expect much, or rather I should be polite and say it’s not to my liking.)
It seems a lil…little old~.
Nino: For us, it’s a sure win you know, skiing that is, because so many people go there. In the middle of that, there ought to be a lot of chances for the two of us to be together.
Shou: You’d think about stuffs like whether or not you can get on the same lift with your beloved person, it’s such a bittersweet feeling ♥.
Aiba: It’s good that there are a lot of people. If it’s only the two of you and you get lost, it’s going to be scary.
Nino: There’s no way they’d get lost.
Aiba: Nah, I got lost a lot at skiing places. So I always make sure to stick to some stranger (laugh).
Jun: Riida, do you know any ski slope?
Ohno: …… I don’t know any.
Aiba: But surely you’ve gone collecting data about those?
Ohno: I know what a ski slope is, but that’s all.
Aiba Masaki: “Sitting around the barbecue fire while saying “it’s cold” together is nice~”
Men totally do not realize when the girls use some “techniques to get popular”~
I got it now. So for the meeting place, we should choose somewhere outside the city. What about some recommendation about a winter party?
Aiba: Barbecue!!
Ohno: Nah, winter should go with nabe.
(T/N: nabe = Japanese hotpot, for more information, see
wikipedia)
Everyone: Nabe is nice~.
Aiba: Barbecue is nice too. While saying “it’s cold”, we’ll sit around the fire together.
Everyone: H~m.
Aiba: Surely for winter nabe is better…… (cry)
But when girls and guys have nabe together and the girl helps everyone with their foods, she could either be praised “you’re so mindful” or be criticized “you’re so sly” (T/N: meaning, she’s trying to show off to get everyone’s favor) - there’s such a double pattern.
Jun: If she doesn’t want to do it, she doesn’t have to.
Shou: That is correct (laugh).
Nino: Absolutely correct! She should ask everyone. Do you want anything else?, do you want another helping?, or something.
Jun: Anyway, if she does it out of her good will, the guys definitely won’t think that she’s being sly.
Shou: Except for the guys with some bad experience with this type of girls in the past.
Nino: Except for the guys who can not get over the scar in their hearts (laugh).
The guys don’t usually misunderstand the girl’s action as being sly; it’s usually the girls who are also at the party that do.
Shou: I see.
Nino: Those kinds of thoughts that girls may have, guys simply can’t understand at all.
What kind of preparation would you like for nabe?
Ohno: Being simple is fine. There’s no need to be too careful about it, like, going so far as to considering about different flavors and such. Some refreshing ponzu is fine with me.
(T/N: ponzu is a citrus-based sauce, we have
wikipedia for more information.)
Aiba: For me, to finish the meal, some kind of thin udon is nice!
(T/N: the dish that finishes a nabe meal is called “shime”, and this was what Aiba chan referred to. Usually “shime” is when everyone has finished eating mostly all of the ingredients and the only thing left in the nabe pot is the broth. Then people will put in some noodles to go with the remaining broth and eat that as the final dish of the nabe meal.)
Shou: It’s udon for me too~.
Ohno: For me, it’s zousui. If that dish is made, no matter how full I am, I will still eat some more.
(T/N: zousui is a Japanese dish, well, it isn’t actually a dish, more like a way to make use of leftover rice. As I’ve just explained, usually some broth is left when everyone has nearly finished the nabe, so zousui can be made from that. It’s easy, you just bring out the leftover rice and put it into the broth.)
Nino: As for me, I don’t need the shime.
Jun: I’m not the type that goes for much carbohydrate. Having shime is fine with me. In my case, soup is okay too, but I’d prefer ramen, I guess. The yakuzen nabe I ate recently was really delicious! Both the spicy red soup and the white soup’s flavors were good.
(T/N: yakuzen nabe is a kind of herb pot originated from Taiwan. The soup usually contains 30 or so medical herbs, and is said to be very good for health. The nabe pot is divided into 2 separate parts, the red side is spicy and the white one is a little sweet. An image for your reference:
)
Ohno: So if you’re by yourself you can actually take on the spiciness. (X Monster’s comment: OMG Riida, this is exactly what I was going to say LOL)
Jun: Yes, yes. It was delicious~. I want to eat that 2-color nabe!
Ninomiya Kazunari: “If I get a “Please marry me ♥” from a girl, I probably wouldn’t be able to refuse…”
Among the 5 members, the one who wants to get married the most is…
By the way, everyone in Arashi, what about your desire to get married?
Aiba: Somehow, I don’t see everyone showing much of that wish. Well, my eyes are not very good at seeing that though.
Nino: Excuse me, could you please mention that fact earlier? (X Monster’s comment: ROFL Nino was as sharp as ever)
Shou: What about Aiba kun?
Aiba: I don’t feel the need to get married much, but with 「My Girl」 , I interact all the time with this little child. She’s really very cute ♥.
Shou: I understand that. Whenever I see my friends’ children, I would think that they are so cute.
Jun: I want to get married though.
Everyone: Oh~!
Jun: To take this seriously, I’d say it’s better that you’re not too old when your children have grown up. I want to go with my children to the TDL. (T/N: this might be obvious, but just in case, TDL is short for Tokyo Disney Land) I’ll wear Mickey’s ears or something.
Shou: I want to play Frisbee with my children. Because I can’t play catch.
Nino: You can play soccer with them.
Shou: That’s good too. Because I’d want to let my children run around.
Jun: Letting them run around with a Frisbee, that’s what you do with dogs, you know! (X Monster's comment: LOL sometimes Jun is so straightforwardly cruel, or cruelly straightforward)
Nino: For me whichever way is fine. Talking about marriage right now, I have no interest. But if a girl asks me to marry her, I probably won’t be able to find any reason to refuse.
Shou: “Excuse me, you are Ninomiya san right? Umm, please marry me” (X Monster’s comment: nice going, Shou chan LMAO)
Nino: Ah, yes I am. Then, shall we do it?
Everyone: LOL
Aiba: As expected, you’ve got a lot of courage.
Ohno: According to my fortune, I will get married at the age of 32.
Jun: It’s coming soon then. Congratulations!
Everyone: clap clap clap
Ohno san, are you ready for that?
Ohno: Totally not.
Do you ask for the other members’ consultation regarding love?
Jun: Because we get along so well, people would have the image that we probably do, I guess. Totally not (laugh).
Matsumoto Jun: “I want to go to TDL with my children. I will probably wear Mickey’s ears ♥”
Do your female friends ask you for consultation?
Aiba: Well, sometimes that topic does come up in our chats, but girls don’t usually ask me for consultation-like answers. The feeling is more casual, starting with something like, “listen!”
Shou: (Akashiya) Sanma san also said that.
(T/N: Akashiya Sanma is a very influential figure in the Japanese entertainment industry. More information available at
wikipedia)
Jun: That the girls usually decide on their own answers.
Shou: And that they only look for some support from us to back up that answer.
Aiba: Generally we don’t have the experience of being consulted about something really serious, right?
Shou: When Toda Erika chan came to 「Himitsu no Arashi chan」, she told us that when they co-starred in the drama, she came to Nino for consultation and he properly listened to her story.
Nino: Um, I did listen to her.
Shou: You seem to be a good listener.
Jun: How about Riida? Do you get consulted?
Ohno: U~m…… (slowly chewing on the pastry he’s eating) No, I guess.
Everyone: LOL
Shou: Are you a grandpa or what!
Aiba: But I do understand why the girls would want to hear opinions from men.
Shou: What is it like from the men’s point of view?, they’d want to know that, right?
They also want to know what their male friends think of the person they like.
Nino: But then, if it’s about the points that can only be seen by their male friends, then for the girls, do those points actually matter? Because those are the parts that girls can’t see no matter what, even if they have some information about it, there’s no use.
Shou: In the end it all comes down to their own measure.
Jun: They have to find out by themselves what to do if the guy they like doesn’t like them back and such, right……
Shou: The answer is within yourself!
Ohno: (take a deep bow)
Everyone: Ahahahahaha
Aiba: When I do consult my friends, I never get any solution out of it (laugh).
Shou: Reading this interview will be a complete loss, I bet PINKY’s readers will get mad at us.
No, no. They will definitely find this useful.
(X Monster’s comment: I personally find this very useless, but, well, it’s Arashi after all, nothing is ever a loss with you guys. So don’t worry, Shou chan LOL)
Shou: That’s a lie. You just said so because you can’t say otherwise (laugh).
Love is different for each person, that’s the fact……
Nino: Just live your life the way you want!
Shou: Because the answer is within yourself.
Ohno: That’s so cool~ (laugh).
Shou: Nah, to all the readers, we Arashi are sorry for our incompetence…… the incompetence that is there even after 10 years (laugh)!
So, have you learned anything from this talk, girls? I have, here, let me share:
