Chapter 03 Chapter 04
It was a good thing Ryeowook was not a heavy drinker. He enjoyed the taste of alcohol, but preferred to have a clear head. If someone would ask him what a hangover was young Ryeowook wouldn't know how to define it. He had heard of the after effects; headache, nausea, sensitive to loud noises and light. Yes, it was truly a good thing Ryeowook almost never drank because when he left his apartment building he had to raise his hand to cover the bright rays of the sun. He smiled faintly and stepped aside for two buff men carrying concrete. They were working on the road and the drill was an unpleasant sound even to Ryeowook's sober self.
Clutching the bag hanging from his shoulder Ryeowook walked along with dozens of other citizens who hoped to be the first in the grocery store to claim the bargains. The place was crowded and it made him sigh in defeat, he wasn't going to try and mingle in between the frantic housewives pushing and cackling loudly for others to make way. Such a sad sight, Ryeowook shook his head and turned around.
He could always come back later and was on his way to the bakery for some fresh bread when he passed a flower shop. A smile settled on his face as he leaned down to inhale all the different scents. Amazing, they smelled so fresh, truly flowers of good quality.
"Hmm, I wonder which ones he likes best.." Ryeowook placed a finger on his lips and puffed his cheeks. It was hard to choose when the collection was so grand. Tulips? Or perhaps sunflowers?
"Can I help you?" A kind voice interrupted Ryeowook's train of thoughts.
"Actually I-" Ryeowook turned around and paused when facing the employee.
Dark hair, juicy lips and big doe eyes. A little taller than himself and older though the childish look on his face begged to differ. Ryeowook's eyes glanced down at the man's nametag. A wide smile spread on his face once more when he stepped to the side and noticed the man's great buns.
"Sorry, something got stuck in my throat" He lied and rubbed the mentioned part of his body. "As I was saying, I can't make up my mind what flowers to buy for my lover." Ryeowook turned back to the flowers with a sad sigh. "Perhaps some Forget-me-nots" he added with a thoughtful look and glanced to the side.
"Forget-me-nots? Those are lovely, they are my lover's favourite. It reminds him of his home country, Canada. He told me prior to becoming the tenth province of Canada in 1949, Newfoundland used the Forget-me-not as a symbol of remembrance of that nation's war deads." The man chuckled and blushed when realizing he was blabbering to a complete stranger. "Oh, I'm sorry, you probably have no interest in hearing that."
Ryeowook gave him a kind smile and waved his hand dismissively. "I've heard they also use the Flanders poppy nowadays, because it is a symbol of fallen soldiers." He noticed the other's eyes widened as he realized they shared an interest. Little did the other know Ryeowook had been told the same story by the same male and merely quoted what his ex-lover had once said.
"You know a lot about flowers?" the employee asked and wiped his muddy hands with a cloth.
"Not yet, I want to know all species and their symbolism if possible" Ryeowook replied and clapped his hands together when a sudden idea struck his mind. "Um, Sungmin, is it? Would you like to help me plant some Forget-me-nots?"
Sungmin looked surprised by the sudden invitation from the man he had just met. Flowers were his passion however, he enjoyed taking care of them and watching them grow over time so how could he refuse such a kind offer?
"Sure, why not. My lover has been ignoring my calls all day anyway. A taste of his own medicine would do him good if I accompany you without informing him. Making him a bit jealous." Sungmin huffed slightly and fished out his phone from his pocket, giving the device a hard look.
It was strange even if they had met just a week ago. Henry used to text him at least twice a day and he hadn't heard anything of the younger one ever since last night. It saddened him, but he wasn't worried. Perhaps this should teach Henry not to ignore his calls and messages and be a good lover to give him some attention. Sungmin decided he had every right to get even with Henry.
They met later after working hours at the gate of the park. Ryeowook gave Sungmin a wave when the older one hurried over, heavy looking bags resting on his arms and against his chest. The older one sighed in relief once Ryeowook offered to carry half of the load.
"I thought you were going to give them to your lover? Why are we going into the park at this hour?" Sungmin shifted the bag of fertilizer in his hands he had brought along from the shop that could provide plant nutrients essential to the growth of the flowers they were going to plant. He found it a bit strange they were going to do gardening in a public park.
Ryeowook chuckled and motioned for the other to follow him. He didn't answer the question and knew it would make Sungmin curious enough to follow him. The struggle through thick bushes caused Sungmin to rip his favourite shirt. Though it was his own fault for not wearing old clothes when he knew he'd be kneeling down in the dirt soon, Sungmin whined and groaned at Ryeowook. He demanded a good reason why they were being sneaky.
"It's a surprise" was all the younger one said before stepping out into the open space he had discovered not too long ago.
Sungmin blinked in surprise, ignoring all the supplies Ryeowook had prepared and noticing the soil that looked perfect for gardening. He smiled and set the bag of fertilizer down, crouching like Ryeowook had done and digging a small hole to see if there was even any need for the nutrition he had brought.
"The soil looks fertile, I don't think there's any need for the bag I brought along. Will your lover come here tonight to see the flowers?" Sungmin asked and looked up, frowning a little as Ryeowook quickly hid something behind his back.
Ryeowook looked a bit on edge, perhaps he was nervous about his lover's reaction? Sungmin looked the other up and down; Ryeowook didn't look obviously gay and Sungmin hated prejudicing so he decided not to ask about the lover's gender. It didn't really matter when Ryeowook was certain his lover liked the flowers.
The younger one shook his head, giving a small smile that looked a bit too forced.
"He's already here" Ryeowook muttered ever so softly that had Sungmin asking him to come closer or speak up.
"Do you miss Henry?"
Sungmin looked perplexed when Ryeowook asked him such a thing. How did the other know his lover's name? Sungmin nodded hesitantly and eyed the younger one, wondering what he was hiding behind his back and why the conversation had suddenly shifted to his lover instead of Ryeowook's. If only he knew their lover was one and the same.
"I believe you will be together again soon." Ryeowook raised his head and laughed cheerfully.
Sungmin laughed awkwardly and nodded before turning his head back to the soil. Such a strange person this Ryeowook was, perhaps it hadn't been a good idea to accept his invitation. Sungmin was receiving strange vibes from the other and those mood swings creeped him out slightly.
"Ah, how do you know his name is Henry?" Sungmin at least wanted to know if there was any link between his lover and this strange man.
The older one wanted to straighten from his crouching position, his legs were starting to hurt quite a bit. Just when he removed his hand from the loose ground in front of him a foot kicked him in the back and made him lose his balance. He tumbled forward and groaned when his face was pressed in the dirt. A weight landed on his back, a hand gripping his hair and lifting his head.
Sungmin gasped and coughed, trying to get the dirty taste out of his mouth while his eyes stung. The tugging on his hair made him cry out in pain and it was then that Sungmin realized this was a carefully planned act and not an accident. All he could do was reach back and grab Ryeowook's wrists, trying to remove the hand from his hair so he could turn around and kick the psychopath off. Ryeowook wasn't strong, but had settled on him at such an angle that made it impossible to use Sungmin's strength to its fullest.
"You're a whore" Ryeowook hissed and yanked at the hair once more, smiling when Sungmin whimpered. "Did you really think I'd just sit back and watch how you steal him from me?!"
He was frightened. The pain was unbearable, Sungmin was certain Ryeowook was going to pull out his hair if he tugged any harder. Moreover he had no idea what the younger one was talking about. This morning had been their first meeting according to Sungmin’s memory and as far as he knew Henry was single when they met and got in a relationship. This was all a misunderstanding, a horrible misunderstanding!
"Ryeowook, I prom-mmmfpf!"
Sungmin was unable to finish when his face met the soil once more. Ryeowook didn't want to hear it, he had listened to that voice for far too long. A week, nights of Sungmin moaning loud enough for the younger one to hear him outside Henry's apartment. Such a whore, shameless and disgusting the way he disturbed everyone with his pleas for more of his Henry. Selfish man, cruel enough to make Henry jealous for not answering his every call. It didn't matter the fact that Henry didn't pick up his phone was Ryeowook's fault.
"Look over there." Ryeowook raised Sungmin's head, turned it to the spot he was mentioning and ignored the other's sputtering noises.
The soil looked different, there were no big lumps as if handled with a plough. Only then did Sungmin spot the spade laying beside it; had someone dug there?
"I'm going to plant the Forget-me-nots for Henry after I'm done with you." Ryeowook looked satisfied for a moment until Sungmin began to struggle underneath him.
The older one kicked his legs and was able to unbalance Ryeowook long enough to see a chance to flip them over, but before he could try to conduct his plan a sharp object pierced his skin and made him cry out. To mask the sound Ryeowook dropped the small garden shears he had been holding and used both hands to stuff Sungmin's face in the dirt.
It only took a few moments of struggling until all was quiet.
"Darn, I forgot to ask what your favourite flower is."
