☂ CHAPTER TWELVE ;

Mai felt so carefree after school. She only started tutoring Nino a week ago, but the past week felt like a long time to her. Now that the test is over, she no longer needed to teach the brat.

Mai started thinking as she slowly walked home.

‘But… he’s different… to what I thought at the start. He can actually be nice… And generous. Eh, what am I thinking?’

Her bag was heavy, full of books she borrowed from the school library to read or reread during the weekend.

“But first,” she reminded herself. “I’ve got to give my answer to Toma.”

‘You guys are best friends, right? If something goes wrong in the relationship, your friendship’s over as well,’ Mai replayed Ohno’s words in her mind.

“Why didn’t I ask him what I should say?” Mai groaned.

After dropping her bag off at home and changing out of her uniform, she walked to the ice cream shop.

“Toma,” she greeted him, walking through the door. She pointed to a table, walked to it and sat down. In a few minutes, Toma sat across from her.

‘What should I say…’

“Not a tutor anymore?” Toma grinned, noticing Nino wasn’t with her.

Mai smiled. “Thankfully.”

“So what’s up?”

“Eh, Iku-chan… can I give my answer now?”

Now?! Toma gulped, nervous. He tried to breathe deeply to calm his racing heart. Then he nodded.

“Ano, Iku-chan… We’re best friends, ne?” Mai asked him. He nodded again.

“If I became your girlfriend… and something goes wrong in our relationship, our friendship will be over as well,” Mai softly said.

Toma’s throat was too dry to let him say anything.

“And…” she continued. “I don’t want to risk losing you.”

Then she hung her head low. “Gomen nasai.”

-

When Mai walked out of the shop, Nino was in front of her.

“Nino?!”

“Yo,” he said. Then he just grabbed her hand and started running.

“Where are we going?!” she asked him, trying to pull her hand away. He just ran faster and gripped on her hand tighter.

“Hayaku! We’re gonna be late!” was all he said.

He finally let go of her hand ten minutes later, when they got to the bus stop. She put her hands on her knees and started panting. She hadn’t run like this for a long time.

“You need to exercise more,” Nino said as the bus came.

“Shut up,” she said. They got on the bus.

“Ah! I don’t have money,” she remembered. Nino pushed her on a seat.

“I got it,” he said to her.

He faced the driver, getting his wallet out of his pocket. “Two tickets.”

Then he sat down next to her.

“Where are we going?” she asked again.

“I’m gonna sleep. If you disturb me, you’re dead,” he just said. Then he rested his head on her shoulder.

She shook him away. ‘What the heck is he doing!’

He glared at her. “Let. Me. Sleep.”

Then he placed his head on her shoulder again.

‘Argh!’

-

When Mai woke up and glanced out of the window, she saw the sky, the sun and the sea.

‘The beach? He’s taking me to the beach?’

Nino stirred beside her.

“Are we there yet?” he murmured.

“If you’re talking about the beach, then yeah.”

The bus stopped. Nino yawned, licked around his lips and stretched. Mai can’t help but wonder why God gave a guy like this such good looks with a personality like that.

“Yosh. Ikimasho,” Nino said, grabbing her hand yet again, and running out of the bus.

They ran down the pathway, and through the beach’s entrance.

Mai looked down at their hands, and their fingers that were interlocked.

When they were at the shore, they sat down on the sand.

“The sun’s gonna set soon,” Nino said.

“Seriously?!” Mai asked, excited. “I haven’t watched the sunset before.”

“So this will be your first?” Nino smiled.

“I guess. Pity it’s with you,” Mai pouted.

-

“Uwah. It’s prettier in real life than watching it in those romantic movies,” Mai sighed, looking at the red and orange scenery before her.

Nino smirked. “You watch that type of movies?”

“Hey,” Mai blushed. “Give me a break, I’m a typical female.”

Nino shook his head in response.

“Iie,” he disagreed. “I don’t think you’re typical.”

Mai felt her cheeks get warmer. “In a bad way… or in a good way?” she asked.

Nino looked at her in the eyes. She wanted to look away, feeling uncomfortable, but was unable to. Ninomiya Kazunari’s eyes… Since when did they look so sincere?

“Both,” he said.

Then he looked away, and concentrated on looking forward at the sea.

“You’re… unique,” he continued.

“Different from the other girls. And… That’s good.”

“But it’s bad for me. Because it’s what made me fall for you.”

Nino looked back at Mai. She looked… angry? A tear came out of her eye. She stood up.
